You would think they had to have had a verbal agreement before taking him though wouldn’t you? It’s not like he was a top 5 pick and taking this year aside isn’t it rare a catcher goes to college and ups his draft stock in any real way? I am just not a fan of Dipoto’s response to taking him, it is very John Schneider esque when taking a high pick and talking about his versatility over and potential for other positions than actually about the player.
i was sayin this to my brother..just yesterday(who does not care that much...lol)..the thing is...schneider..is no depoto...
and the seahawks have gottin away..from what got them to the super bowl..defence...pete ..is a defensive coach..and secondary coach..and even if his guys..in the secondary..leave for san fran...he should be able to get another.athlete...and make him into..a secondary guy..where a lot of high round picks should have went...they did on offence..but not the o line..and they will need a LT..soon

and there..Dline is not quit good enough...with no rush guy

one of there original things they wanted to do is...keep cost down by having draft choices...till there first free agentsy..but ya cant do that if you are trading,,the picks away...they went to the super bowl...but...never really reloaded..on defence..even though they tryed

thomas went to the ravins...seahawkes have not reloaded..last time i looked...but earl thomas..does not come along..every day

Ya this seemed like a signing pick over a talent pick. I wanted Painter for over a month now. I just like pitchers early becauseI believe hitters can be made to a point vs pitchers. An athletic catcher is like bragging about having the tallest midget.

The prearranged signing reminds me of when we took Steve Barron as our 3rd pick of the 1st round years ago because he agreed to sign for under slot. Then after he was drafted he held out for more money.

I guess when I am 60 we will know they were right or not.

mariners are loaded at catcher..everywhere..but AZL..and DSL..at azl..they could use a HS catcher(cobb) to work with pitchers there..
before they get to modesto..and work with dsl guys that come up...

to get that lvl of catcher..from HS..you almost have to get him in the 1st round....which..when i saw that ..they needed that...i was like...aaaahh welll
cuz i did not want a 1st rounder at catcher...but ..depoto..had the balls...to do it...and i know it will work out

they do not need..a starting pitcher..at modesto..they have enough..even with guys moving up...sure..they could use a few more..

but the best hs catchers....get had..in the 1st round..for HS guys..and the value that he will provide..to ..the pitchers at AZL..will be immeasurable
and all the way up till he gets to mlb

You don't draft for minor league teams, you draft for future major league teams. He may be a great pick, but if his best asset is his athleticism I question that. When was the last time the best high school athlete at his school was made into a catcher? I guess it could happen, but that level athleticism (if that is what he has) is always moved to SS or CF. Just sounds odd to me, but like I said, we will know sometime around my 60th birthday...and I will careless by that point in my life. :)

Really no idea, I just liked the two SS’s because they both were linked to Seattle. Then learning Watson got a full ride to Clemson made me want him. But baseball scouting is hard so I can’t criticize it. If it was a consensus terrible pick like Hultzen then yeah, but it wasn’t a reach. Just odd on Raleigh’s call up they chose another catcher, immediately says he can play middle infield or CF, but want him to try as a catcher first. The entire gist of Jerry’s comment is illogical. Super athletic guy who can play those other positions, but first we want him to fail by playing the one position that makes you less athletic over time then move you to positions you to the other ones. Of all of my time with baseball Biggio is the only one I can think of that was a catcher but didn’t move to either corner infield or corner outfield.

I will say the best athlete on my HS team was our catcher. The athleticism really did help him get out of the crouch and throw out runners. In our all star game to keep him in they played RF for an inning and he dropped two balls. This is where I get my belief on it isn’t as easy as some say with well just put him at X position cause it isn’t hard.

cobb..is the best hs catcher...that is why...mayo put him where he did........just trust in that

there are good collage ss..just not a lot in this draft...

next year..shortstops..in collage and hs
will be all over the place...
there are a lot of collage ss..that will move to 2Bin this draft..

there are a lot of good 1b..in this draft..which..the whole of mlb can use an influx of 1B guys

a lot of kelinic type LF/CF...type of outfield guys..

im good with the mariners draft so far

my hs catcher box is checked..in a big way...lol....harry ford
as is my collage catcher box..............also big....andy thomas...the thing about andy...is he is a left handed hitter...but he throw's right...he is one of my top choices for catcher..for the ..mariners...so...whooo hoooo...ok got that out.

.if you go ...Cal Raleigh 29...and then need..need a back up..thomas would be almost perfect fit..

but he does not need to..hang on cal's coat tails...thomas is good

#1..Ford, Harry.catcher....lololol...nice...!!!

#2Arroyo, Edwin...checks my box for hs ss...is also good..i would expect him at AZL this year,,and modesto..next..but who am i to say..
if he is at AZL...then they need..one more guy...then again..if he is at modesto..they still need one more guy...lolol...nice!!!

#3 Morales, Michael.....R/R..a guy to work with harry ford...but.. morales is a top HS arm..that i will have to look at more
even though i clicked on him..a few times..i did not go far...im not a big...AT..scouting ..HS.. guys....cuz..basicly ..im a fan...lolol
but morales checks a HS..pitcher box..and will prob be at..AZL..as well

4,
Miller, Bryce.........R/R...miller..checks all the pitchers boxes..for me..at the same time...he is a swiss army knife...lol..wow..i did not..think of that
but the mariners can use that...lololol..and athey have there extra starter..for modesto..box checked

#5 Thomas, Andy............catcher....whoo..hoo...uhh....uucchhmmm....ok

#6
Woo, Bryan.....R/R...i have not looked at him...but i will...i do not have time ...this ..mornin

7.Davis, Colin...CF..from wofford...i have posted him many times...he could play LF as well prob...he can steal a base..he can hit a HR..i would expect him to start at modesto....

8.Parker, James...ss...i dont know..if he play's...ss...for modesto..cuz..his ..FLD..is like..920..at ss...that makes him...for me...2B/3B

9.Packard, Spencer....RF/1b.....rbis leader..with fewest...strike outs..can start at aqua sox..or modesto...he was one of my choices..for the mariners..
a ..woohoo again

10.Jackson, Jordan...i will have to look at him later as ..well

nice so far...im ..on the edge..holding my breath..for the next ten...with the oxygen bottle close...naaa..im going to work...lol
