Man, that's gotta be the scariest set of forwards. Probably 3 of the top 10 forwards of all-time. Little weak in the back though (woop woop woop).

Yeah, I mean who would want two first ballot Hall of Famers on D?

He was barely a Blue at all (195 games). He played more games in Washington than he did anywhere else.

Yes, but not in his prime. I'm just telling you what I think of him as. Those few years with the Blues he was incredible with Hull and played his best hockey in Boston. That's my opinion. As a Caps' fan, he doesn't crack the top 10 of best Capitals - not even close.

Why are you antagonizing me today?

Coffey was excellent, but Murphy was more of an offensive defenseman and Barasso is pretty weak compared to other teams' best goalie of all-time.

Antagonizing you? Seriously? You just happen to be saying a lot of shit that I disagree with today.

If I was going to say that one of Murphy or Coffey was defensively sub-par it wouldn't be Murphy. But this all comes back to the discussion in the "#1 Defenseman" thread... if you have D that can control and move the puck well then they don't have to spend all of their time in the defensive zone anyway. Especially with those forwards too.

And I don't think Barrasso is all that bad. He's a borderline HoFer with a Vezina Trophy, I suspect that there's a lot of teams that don't have a goalie with a resume like that.

I'm not sure he has a strong case for any team's "all-time" team, but I think his strongest cases would be Boston and then Washington.

Great - then just say the bold part next time instead of the condescending sarcasm.

I think this is a fairly weak 3 at the back compared to most other teams (and probably the best 3 forwards as well). These are the best 6 of all franchises. Obviously every team is going to have excellent players to slot in. Most are going to be HOFers or future HOFers. So acting like I think Coffey and Murphy are "poor" players is disingenuous.

They're not even "poor" players in this context though. I've seen lots of players worse than them mentioned, and can think of a lot more on teams that haven't been done yet.

Mike Gartner can't catch a goddamn break in this room, I swear

Mike Gartner's pretty close. I was thinking of it as LW/C/RW, and I thought Bondra and Ovechkin are no brainers on the wing, though Gartner is pretty damn close. There's a good case for him over Bondra, but Bonzai was my favorite player as a kid - so tough sell there.

And I think at C you have a lot of good arguments for Ridley, Backstrom, Pivonka, and Maruk with all having different talents and tenures.

Using actual positions, not just 3 forwards...

G: Tom Barrasso
D: Paul Coffey
D: Dave Burrows
C: Mario Lemieux
LW: Kevin Stevens
RW: Jaromir Jagr

Can't disagree with that since you have the LW and RW but scary to think the Centers behind Lemiuex in Francis, Crosby and Malkin.

Anyway I would rather have either Randy Carlyle or Murphy (shown earlier) on D.

I think Barasso is near the bottom of the barrel for best franchise goalies.

Here's a great argument against your case. From 1990-1992, these Pen all-time greats played together - Murphy, Coffey, and Barasso all on the back end for the Pens.

In 1990-1991, they ranked 4th to last in goals allowed. In 1991-1992, they ranked 3rd to last in goals allowed. Barasso was ranked 10th and 19th in save percentage in those seasons. If those players stack up comparably against the other great defensive combos of all-time, how come they can't even stack up favorably against the players in their day?

Those teams were carried by offense. Scary good offense. Lemieux was off the charts, Stevens was ridiculous, Jagr was on the team, Joe Mullen, and they had lots of role players. Goals galore.

Paul Coffey was legit. Barrasso and Murphy on the back end scares nobody.
