That's totally laughable ... 8-10 years? Hah. Fat guy will be lucky to get 4 from somebody. Probably was doing the same stuff that his teammate Braun was doing.

Sign Fielder and find out he's dirty ... that's like sentencing yourself to lose him for 50 games right off the bat.

Bad luck for Fielder that he's without a team right now.

And I quote...per scotsman
"they might look at a good 5-year deal because that would allow them to go after another 5+ year contract before he retires"

No one is agreeing to an 8-10yr deal...

Don't think he was busting scotsman's balls. Just the concept that fielder and boras might actually be expecting an 8 yr deal.

The brewers just signed aramis Ramirez to a 3 yr 36 million dollar deal. I don't think they're planning on signing fielder.

so you're basically painting everyone on the Brewers as dirty by association?

and how many expected Pujols to get a 10-year deal? Borass always expects his clients to get max years and max money and until recently that was something close to whatever Pujols got but now with most teams dropping out of the chase for Fielder i think 5 years will get it done.

* The Rangers appear to have less payroll flexibility than expected and are interested in trading for arms such as Matt Garza, Wade Davis and Gio Gonzalez. Texas did not make official offers to C.J. Wilson or Mark Buehrle before the southpaws signed elsewhere, Rosenthal reports.
* It's worth noting that Texas has a full projected rotation: Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, Derek Holland, Scott Feldman, Alexi Ogando and Colby Lewis.
* The Rangers remain "in" on Mike Gonzalez, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter link). The Yankees and Cardinals also have some interest in the free agent left-hander.

Pretty sure everyone did. That was the word all season long, that STL had offered a 10 year deal and that anyone who signed him would either give him that long or more money per year to make up the difference.

No, unless I woke up in 2008 again.

Texas doesn't get the TV money until 2015, so much less flexibility until then.

Not sure if they still owe Arod money, but they did ($24.9 million). There was also another 17 million owed in salary and defered payments to Mickey Tettelton ($1.4), Mark McLemore ($970,00), Kevin Millwood ($12.9) and Vincent Padilla ($1.7). That's 41 million that was paid to players who are long gone. There is also another 30 million going/gone to Greenberg and millions to be spent on arbitration eligible players before ST.

There are no former players on the payroll for 2012, at least not currently. I guess we could cut someone and that statement would be wrong, but as of right now we are all square

So why do they seem so afraid of increasing payroll?

Because the Rangers are probably just about break even right now. I don't remember big ticket increases, but the owners have been trying to pay off the Hicks debt while also bringing the park back up to standard with upgrades. TV money doesn't come around for 3 more years, and word is they are trying to finally sell the naming rights to get some money in now.

Hicks left the books in shambles. I think the owners have lost money to this point in just servicing the debt and getting everything healthy again. Getting old contracts off the books, getting the park out of the 90's, and making sure that everything is lined up going forward.

Plus I think we have a bigger payroll for foreign players and scouts than most teams...does that count against our "payroll" number that is reported?

you have to get healthy before you start spending or else you will just make things worse down the road.

8 years is the max I have heard for Fielder, but with Capt Evil as his agent I wouldn't doubt he tries to dupe teams into 10 years.

The best option I have heard, and I think it was mentioned a few pages ago, is that Boras might talk Fielder into a reasonable length 5 year deal and then try to land one more big deal after that. I think the Rangers would do that. At this rate, in 5 years the going rate for a big bomber might be $40mill. And you know RBIA wont' hurt his power numbers any.

Good post. And it's worth noting that Texas just offered arbitration to Andrus, Napoli, Murphy, Cruz, Harrison, and Lowe.

thank you for remembering my suggestion. now it might take 110-120M to get him for those 5 years

Yeah, can you imagine what the future holds as far as what payroll will be if resign Andrus, Kins, Hamilton, Cruz, Holland, Harrison, Feliz, and Nap?

Oh yeah, it will take $20M+ to sign him, but that much per year for only 5 years is a lot more palatable to me as a fan than that much per year for the next decade.
