From Scott Lucas about Round Rock's performances last night.

SP Spencer Howard: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 4.50 ERA
RP Jake Latz: 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 SO, 4.50 ERA
3B Josh Jung: 1-3, walk, .297/.381/.595
SS Ryan Dorow: 2-4, triple, HR (5), .216/.308/.389

And from Frisco's game.

DH Davis Wendzel: 2-4, double, walk, .241/.336/.407
RF Blaine Crim: 2-5, HR (7), .295/.340/.568
1B Sam Huff: 2-4, double, .225/.286/.451

It's an admittedly cherry-picked small sample, but Sam Huff is hitting .368 with two doubles, two homers and just five strikeouts in his last five games. It's the only five-game stretch in AA in which he has more hits than strikeouts. Who knows, maybe he dons a golden sombrero tonight, but maybe he's getting back into a groove.

And from Hickory.

Dustin Harris has inevitably cooled off, but even the cooler half of his 25 games in Hickory is an impressive .333/.400/.556. For a depth-oriented system to succeed, some of depth players need to set themselves apart. Don't pencil a high-A corner infielder into an Arlington lineup just yet, but Harris has definitely set himself apart in 2021. Harris has played about a quarter of his games in Hickory at third base.

Hopefully, when the right free agent does come along, JD and company will have learned from it and will start the bidding higher.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say the Rangers offer Correa a very competitive contract, but in the end are outbid by another team. Do we consider that a failure?

(for this discussion let's assume the offer is the final one)

If it's competitive, I say no it's not a failure.

Both the Diamondbacks and the Orioled have released him this year. I guess it is out turn to keep him for a few days
He fills a minor-league roster spot so we can bring someone up

No not a failure just got outbid. If he was plan A then move to Plan B (Story or whoever)

Or we give him a chance and go ahead and cut ties with Culberson and Holt who are FA after the year ends anyway.
Leyba just turned 25 and I don’t see any harm in seeing if he can be a part of the club moving forward. He had some nice OBP and pop in the minors and is versatile

Unless we bring him up during this season for X number of games(don’t know how many) he becomes a minor league free agent.

If we brought him up now and added him to the 40 and cut Dennis Santana I would be ok with that

I am in favor of cutting the deadwood so we can see what our quality prospects can bring so if we cut loose Santana, Culbertson or Holt or others I would rather see Jung or Huff or Winn than Leyba

There's going to be two things working against the Rangers on this:

1) The Lindor deal
2) Whichever contract is signed first will set the tone for the rest of the market
A flooded SS market may work to our advantage

I agree but it was pretty much public knowledge that there 3 teams that were seriously in on bidding for Rendon and that it was also apparent that although Texas was listed as the 4th team we weren’t even in the ballpark as far as our offer was concerned with the other 3. Rendon and Boras had publicly stated that they were looking for a minimum of 6-7 years and JD supposedly offered 2-3
We had the second best offer as reported and was told no counter for the extra year was to be considered. Whether we would have offered the extra year is debatable and the given cost of living we were the highest AAV

I am trusting JD. His reaction to not getting to negotiate any further was very telling to me. He seemed more surprised than I have ever seen him. He seemed shocked. He has missed out on signing lots of guys and in making lots of trades down through the years, and I have never seen him act as surprised as he did after Rendon signed.
Yea I think JD wanted Rendon. What we are not sure of is what Rendon wanted other than the 7th year

Okay, I found their prediction. They said he would get 7 years at $235 million, so they were very close.

That being the case, I think JD just misread Boras' patience. He must have known that it was going to take at least $180-200 million and at least 6 years.
Or he had no ok money wise from owners but I can see what you are saying

Jeff Wilson recently spoke to Jon Daniels. Here is some of what he had to say.

“It is a good free-agent class, but it also appears to be a good free-agent class a year from now and two years from now,” Daniels said. “We want to take meaningful steps forward, but we don’t necessarily need to do all of our shopping in one free-agent class.”

Don’t roll your eyes. The Rangers know what’s coming from the minors and also know that they have players who can play multiple positions. It’s piecing the prospect timelines with the big-league team’s immediate and future needs.

That might reduce the number of big-name players the Rangers pursue immediately, but not how much they can spend.

“That allows us to really target who are the best fits overall,” Daniels said. “Because of that, there aren’t many players that we will be out on. From a position standpoint, I think it’s going to be more, does he fit for us financially, does he fit for us as a player we really want to acquire? We can really consider guys at just about any position.”

This is basically my stance on it all in regards to most positions,

but SS is the one spot I don't really see a guy that I see sticking at SS from our system, most seem destined for other positions (2B/OF), that's why I'm okay going the FA SS route, someone versatile like chris taylor and Yan Gomes at catcher

But a hard no on Carlos Correa IMO, he's destined to be a Jeter "good" defensively at SS, which means not a lot of plays made but makes the ones he gets to... which isn't much

Plus that injury history is a no fly for me with that kind of contract

I'm good with Story though, his Colorado splits scare me some, but he seems to like Globe Life, so I say throw the vault at him, he's good defensively, much more range than Correa, and doesn't have the injury history of Correa, I think his rookie year is the only time he's missed significant time (elbow?)

Plus I always say invest in pitching
