I may be wrong but wasn’t the Rendon fiasco in November and December of 2019 and the COVID didn’t reach here until January in 2020. I don’t think we had yet fathomed how serious it was when we “attempted” to sign him. The Angels signed him to a 7-year $245M deal and several other teams had offered him 6 or 7 years for around 32-35M AAV. Not sure of the exact numbers the Rangers offered but supposedly it was either a 2-year 60-62M deal or they were willing to add a team option 3rd year at 34M.
Yes, that is what I meant. I was very strongly in favor of signing him at the time. In hindsight, Covid and its consequences made me glad we didn't.

Okay that I can see. Of course now I’m glad we missed and not because of COVID

Couple things here:

Neither JD or Boras is going to publicly paint an accurate picture of how things actually went down. I'm sure there's some truth in both stories but we'll never know. JD has what he's trying to accomplish and so does Boras. Obviously everyone should take whatever they say with a grain of salt. Between the two, I'm inclined to trust JD more than Boras. Boras got an incredible deal for Rendon, so he did his job. JD wasn't the one giving the deal, so he also did his job.
I am trusting JD. His reaction to not getting to negotiate any further was very telling to me. He seemed more surprised than I have ever seen him. He seemed shocked. He has missed out on signing lots of guys and in making lots of trades down through the years, and I have never seen him act as surprised as he did after Rendon signed.

I think he honestly believed that Rendon would accept the Rangers offer because he was from Texas and would give us a hometown deal no matter how our offer compared to the other offers

I personally would be shocked if JD thought that.

My theory, such as it is, is that Boras already had an offer that dwarfed the Rangers initial one, which JD wasn't aware of. JD underestimated what kind of market there was for Rendon, and assumed that Boras would at least make a counteroffer to the Rangers initial. Obviously Boras had no need to do that.

And honestly, I was shocked Rendon got what he did as well.

I should mention that I've only had that theory since reading your post; I wasn't aware of JD's reactions you mentioned until now.

Both the Diamondbacks and the Orioled have released him this year. I guess it is out turn to keep him for a few days

I don't remember, was it close to what Mlbtraderumors.com guessed he would get? They usually preview the market every year and try to guess what each player will get. I think they usually fo a decent job guessing, but I cannot remember his situation at all.

Okay, I found their prediction. They said he would get 7 years at $235 million, so they were very close.

That being the case, I think JD just misread Boras' patience. He must have known that it was going to take at least $180-200 million and at least 6 years.

In the end, it worked out ideally for the Rangers.

Hopefully, when the right free agent does come along, JD and company will have learned from it and will start the bidding higher.
