Alex really helped by being a pro the whole time. Hope he has success with Andy.

Agree with both statements. It's hard to remember a guy under so much pressure in that situation acting so totally professional in a long time. No one comes to mind. At any point he could have said "Fuck it, I just don't need this anymore." He had to be thinking this day would be coming.

Okay, what's the source for the '14 pick being 2nd rounder?

@AdamSchefter: Chiefs will trade second-round pick this year - the top pick in second round - as well as another conditional mid-round pick in 2014.

Boom is right. That's incredible. Obviously Smith can be somewhat productive with the right fit and system so I'm hesitant to use the word insane, but that's just incredible.

I wish the 49ers could have got McCluster back in the deal as well. Ha. Love that guy. That wasn't realistic I'm sure, though.

I'm stunned.

wow!

we shouldn't expect TOO much out of "conditional mid round pick in 2014", but then again that is icing on the cake.

I'm going to hold off on freaking out until it's official. But if it's for even the second-rounder, much less a second-rounder and more...wow! That would be incredible.

So 8 years later Smith is finally drafted where he should have been all along - Baalke just sealed the deal for GM/Exec of the Year in 2014!

Tim Kawakami:

An NFL source says that the framework of the deal is that the 49ers will get a No. 2 pick this year and a similar pick in the 2014 draft.

Something similar in 2014? Even a 3rd? No way. No freaking way.

Isn't this an overstatement, Chris? In the right system, like last year, Smith can throw for 70% completion at 8.0 YPA. That's very productive. He stunk in a bad system, he was OK with a decent system, and he was good in a good system. And its not like he'll just forget everything he learned from QB guru Harbaugh going forward, good bet he'll stay above the levels he was at in 2010 - 2011 range, if not stay at 2012 level.

Look at the supply and demand here. There is nothing else resembling a good QB on the horizon, just a bunch of question marks, while there are a few teams that could use a QB. Smith is decent, with a lot of strong intangibles that can help a team. I'm not really that surprised the haul Niners got in return is decent.

We shouldn't have even expected a 2nd rounder period! So we are way ahead of our expectations my friend.

mainly because its a weak year for QB's

Yea but it sounds like the chiefs wanted him. They are signing him to an extension from reports. Getting a 2nd + is amazing.
