Is this like Shields' $110 mil offer he got last offseason?

Jayson Stark of ESPN hears from teams negotiating with Jeff Samardzija that the free agent right-hander claims to have a $100 million offer on the table.

Some have looked at Samardzija as a potential bargain coming off a down year, but this report suggests otherwise. One reason he's such a popular name is that he doesn't have nearly as much mileage on his arm as some of the other free agent starters. The Cubs and Giants are among the teams who are reportedly interested in the 30-year-old

Shark is getting a 5+ year deal while still costing a pick?

GAWD, I hope the Giants dont get him.

I would be OK signing him to a 1-year deal, just so he can re-establish his value, though. Then we would get a comp pick next year when he walks (similar to what Baltimore did with Cruz a couple years back).

Really hope it's not AZ.

He's a 2 starter at best and pitched like a #3 starter last year if I'm being generous. Unreal price.

Kinda have to think it's an NL team right? Gotta be back to the Cubs?

He's the Tony Romo of baseball. Sure, he may fill up a fantasy stat sheet, but when it comes to winning meaningful games, he just ain't it. Down the stretch of the last couple seasons, I remember him losing a ton of 1-run games with a frequency enough for me to take notice. Now that can't be pinned on him entirely, but the handful of games I had watched him pitch, it was him giving up the lead later in the game. He's a #3 IMO with electric stuff that occasionally stumbles into a gem. Not worth 100 mil but then again, the market is trending that way. I remember when Gil Meche, a .500 pitcher signed a 5-year/50 mil deal about a decade ago with the Royals and I remember thinking the price of average had gone up. 100 Mil may be the market for average now.

Thinking about it now, Gil Meche's contract with the Royals may have been 4/40....but I do remember it was 10-11 mil per season.

I thought Meche was 5/55 while guys like Pavano got 4/40.

Either way the game has certainly changed for MOR starters.

Shark's likely to last longer than the rest of the FA class, but we'll see if he can get back to his old self.

Samardzija's 2014 is his only really good year. His strikeout and ground ball rates dropped sharply in 2015, and he's always been fairly HR prone.
