Bad calls are going to happen, but it's only 1/162nd of the season. No guarantee that the Pirates win the game anyway, but I understand the frustration since it looked like it brushed his leg.

I can also understand the bad call since he barely brushed the leg. Even the announcer botched it while watching the instant replay and saying the catcher tagged him "again on the arm." Reffing is a tough ass job.

True, but when you look at the replay the ump was concentrating on moving the bat instead of moving his position to make a better call. It's a tough thing sometimes to do all the right things when so many other things are happening, that being said you need to make the best effort you can to make the right call, he didn't do that IMO.

It just seemed he mailed it in. Seriously. I doubt he actually believed, even right after the call, that he was right.

The Pirates announcers made a good point as well. Ever since the Buster Posey injury home plate collisions are being frowned upon. So if you look at the vid, McKenry gives Lugo the entire plate to slide at and swipes him with the tag. Meals insists he "ole'd" the tag and missed him. So i assume McKenry should have simply blocked the plate at that point and have a collision and risk injury to both players.

The Pirates are on their 7th catcher this season already...

That sucked. The ump is going to be chilling out on 3rd base today, right in front of the Bucs dugout.

I take some solace that the Bucs are relevant in August. I'm not a Pirate fan but I live here, and the baseball fans here deserve a winner.

When the throw beats the runner by that much, the ump better be pretty fucking certain that he missed the tag. I don't see how he could have been in this case.

Agree 100%. It was a bad call but that Ump behind the plate was brutal all night with the ball/strike calls for both sides. I laughed the one inning Martinez hit the outside corner it was called a ball. The Strikezone thing Root Sports (worst name ever!) has showed it as a strike. The bottom of the inning Grilli threw the same pitch he called it a strike.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do now lets hope, for us Pirate fans, they come out and win again today.

It was six and 1/2 hours, the game ended at 1:50 am EST. I believe it broke the Braves longest game ever in franchise history... not sure about the Pirates record on that.

Brown kept saying it was the longest road Pirate game ever.

The good news for Pirates fans is McCann is on the DL. He is far and away, the best hitter in Atlanta's lineup.

The bad news for Pirates fans is Jair Jurjjens is pitching tonight, and he currently is one of the best in baseball.

I agree with McCann and Jones out of the lineup there isn't much there. Teams figured out Heyward, just throw the fastballs in on him.
Lets hope tonight Maholm can put up 7-8 innings since that bullpen is pretty much spent, except for Hanrahan.

That is the one thing going for the Braves is the fact Jurrjens is so good and they probably are expect 7-8 innings out of him.

On the other hand the Pirates aren't putting the fear of god in teams with the likes of Paul, Jones, Overbay and Alvarez at the corner positions.

This one of those calls that even if the catcher did not tag his leg, nobody could blame the ump for calling him out. Yea, you have to go with your heart when you are a professional umpire, but the 19th inning game of two playoff contenders and make a brash call like that?

Instant replay is so necessary in this sport its ridiculous.

One other thing you have give McKenry credit for catching all 19 innings. At first I thought oh joy another bad hitting roster filler but he is actually fun to watch behind the plate.

Agreed. I'm not a baseball fan in general, even though I try every year. But there are a lot of very loyal Pirates fans that have been dying for a winner.

I don't recall a Pirate being called safe at home on an obvious out. You care to shed some light on your opinion?
