Is there any benefit to cut a player rather than trading for a 7th rounder?

Thinking about the jags cutting Fournette, and my first thought was that someone would most definitely claim him on waivers. But then I got to thinking that I would have imagined that Jaguars tried to shop him around prior to cutting him.

My question is this: is there any benefit to cutting someone (who I assume is in the last year of his contract) rather than trading him?

Do teams get a compensatory draft pick if he gets picked up off waivers or is that just free agency?

Also, I heard the jags claimed they had zero offers for fournette so they may not have had a choice in that case

I don't believe so for waivers. Fournette's value is not exactly good though. In fact... it's replacement value.

This. If teams received compensatory picks for placing players on waivers, the waiver wire would light up like crazy.

The player’s existing contract could be a negative a prospective trade partner. Most teams wouldn’t give any kind of a pick if the player is not worth his contract.
I’m sure the Ravens would have loved a pick for Earl Thomas, but his remaining contract would kill a deal.

right. But I imagine with Fournette, someone would be willing to pick up that contract right? I'm just wondering if anyone is willing to make a waiver claim on Fournette, because if they were willing to pick up the contract on waivers, one would think they would be willing to trade a token draft pick to avoid the waiver process.

I think he's owed $4.5 mill this year but the jags claim they got no offers

It looks like LF had a base salary of about $4M plus a prorated $4M in signing bonus($17+M wow!).
No team would take that on and Jax has to eat the $8M this year.

Correction, if a team traded for LF, they would not be liable for any of the sign bonus, just salary.

oh wow, so the Jags would eat that contract unless someone traded for LF (minus the prorated bonus)? If someone claims him off of waivers then the Jags would still be off the hook for that base salary against the cap right?

Only FA, and then the size of the contract determines if a company pick is warranted.
yeah, but a little more to it than that - # of FAs lost vs signed, total # of comp picks already awarded (must be under max), playing time, performance, etc

If a team was willing to pick up Fournette's contract they would almost certainly have been willing to give up a conditional 7th round pick if he met certain targets. That no team was willing to give up such a pick tells you he's unlikely to be claimed off waivers. He's worth less to a new team now than he would have been worth in March. The Jaguars overestimated his value and now they'll get nothing.

Be interesting to see if a team is willing to pick him up now and pay that salary or wait until until he clears waivers then sign him for less.

Correction. If a team traded for LF they would be liable to whtever they agreed to, subject to league approval.....

He'll pass through and signed at a much lower price.
