It was only in '11 that outfield positions were separated. They both won GG's at the same time. Apparently, the award doesn't discriminate.

What great team that Seattle team was with Griffey, A Rod, Buhner and Edgar Martinez and Randy JohnsonAll very Good points. But still, Seattle Mariners Griffey is the best player I've seen since I started watching baseball in '85. Trout is moving his way up the list though.

Trammell yes but Whitaker no.
Fuck no!!!
I loved Jim when he was with the Angels, but he was just a very good player.....never an elite player. His defense was excellent, but he wasn't a great player imo. And only great players deserve to get in the HOF.
The guy had a 5 year stretch where he averaged .298/36/100 with a 1.003 OPS (157 OPS+) from the CF position and you don't consider that elite? I'd say any player who's posting a 150 OPS+ from a premium defensive position is elite for that season/stretch.
I saw him play a lot. A 5 year stretch out of a 17 year career is what you consider HOF material? I guess our standards are different.
And I loved the way he played the game, 100% balls out.
Joe Morgan, Robbi Alomar and Ryne Sandberg definitely had better careers. How many 2nd basemen since WW2 have had better overall careers than Whitaker? The list is very, very short.
He was a much better player with the Cardinals than he was with the Angels, so if you watched him mostly with the Angels, then did you really see him at his peak/prime?
When a player's best 5 year stretch is as good as Edmonds is, combined with the rest of his career (he had very good seasons in years such as 2005, 1996, 1997, 1998), I'd say he's pretty close and borderline.
Edmonds was pretty amazing as a Cardinal. I have him and Chris Carpenter on my 10 favorite players list and neither put together a HOF career. It is what it is. Cooperstown has some pretty insane standards. He was a much better player with the Cardinals than he was with the Angels, so if you watched him mostly with the Angels, then did you really see him at his peak/prime?
It wasn't 4 or 5 years. It was his entire career. He and Griffey were both great CF'ers in the 90's. Griffey hit better and thus was awarded the GG's.
My favorite Edmonds catch...
Joe Morgan, Robbi Alomar and Ryne Sandberg definitely had better careers.
Several others that someone could argue. Such as Jackie Robinson, but the man didn't even play 750 games at that position. No matter what, the list is short.
Jeff Kent doesn't get enough love IMO.Joe Morgan, Robbi Alomar and Ryne Sandberg definitely had better careers.

Thinking about Edmonds, it does make you wonder how good a guy like Willie Mays would be in today's game with how much it has evolved every year.
Kent had a better OPS+ than Sandberg, Alomar and Whitaker while driving in 100 runs 8 times in his career. He also has an MVP. Obviously his glove wasn't good, but I still think he is undervalued.I don't think he was nearly as good as any of those four (Morgan, Sandberg, Alomar, Whitaker). When comparing him to other great 2B, his offense wasn't good enough to compensate for him being a below average defensive 2B and providing nothing of value on the bases.
