Agent: Brandon Carr will not take a pay cut with Dallas
AP
The Dallas Cowboys have hoped they could convince cornerback
Brandon Carr to take a pay cut this offseason.
Carr doesn’t appear to be open to that idea.
According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Carr’s agent, Ben Dogra, said that Carr
will not be taking a pay cut with the Cowboys.
With
Morris Claiborne sidelined for the offseason and a possible candidate to land on the physically unable to perform list to start the year, the Cowboys could certainly use Carr’s depth and experience on the roster. However, it also makes the argument for Carr to accept a pay cut a bit hollow as well.
Carr is scheduled to make $8 million this season from Dallas. With his refusal to accept a pay cut, it may lead to the Cowboys having to release Carr. The team has less than $5 million in salary cap space currently, per NFLPA records.

We already need to account for his unallocated cap hit ($12.1M) whether he is here or not. But if he stays we owe him huge salaries as well. 2015: $8M; 2016: $9.1M; 2017: $10M. You can say cutting him would hurt and it would - either $12.1M dead money this year (savings of $600K) or split over two years ($7.4M savings this year). But keeping him is worse. If he plays out his contract his total cap hit over hte next 3 years would be: $39.2M!!! That's a $13M average per year. There is no way he gets that and if it means we need to cut him then so be it. It doesn't help to put it off one more year and incur a $12.1M cap hit this year and still take a $7.4M cap hit when we let him fgo next year.

IMO he is taking a risk by forcing this because he isn't going to get a big contract right now and doesn't have any unpaid guaranteed $'s. So if he walks out the door it's with nothing. I guess he's thinking if we only want to give him $4M instead of $8M he can get that elsewhere...maybe he's right, but he needs to go if he wants to play it this way...

The dead money is money he's already been paid but has been accounted for yet. $4.717M of that is due to count this year and another $4.717M counts next year. If the Cowboys and Carr don't reach an agreement he'll probably be released some time after June 1st. The consequence of that is it would accelerate the last $2.717M scheduled for 2017 into the 2016 cap calculations. That wouldn't be a big problem for the Cowboys. Finding a good FA deal late in the pre-season program wouldn't be easy for Carr. Carr's options are renegotiate or perform like a $8M star in camp.

Not necessarily. We could cut him today and designate him a post 6/1 cut and get the same benefit, but doing so before the draft and before we get a better handle on Claiborne's rehab wouldn't be wise.

Totally agree. There's no benefit in letting him go early. There doesn't seem to be any offsetting language as the Rams had with Finnegan.

Carr isn't worth it.

I'm of the opinion Carr should be cut tomorrow. Take cap hit this year and get it over with now -- not post June 1. If Dallas needs money they can get it somewhere else (e.g. Romo).

I agree with what's said here about the risk Carr is taking. Everyone in the league knows the Cowboys need help in the secondary, if they are drawing a line on Carr's salary, it's hard to believe he'll get much more anywhere else

Carr has been garbage in this defense. Better off drafting a few corners in draft and signing a veteran

I really dislike Carr, but I dont know of too many people who would take a pay cut in any profession, if they thought they desreved their respective pay. If that was the case, everyone on the team shoyuld take a paycut to help out.

I think it's more that he has two options. Take a pay cut or get cut with nothing. We owe him no guaranteed money. Free knew he wasn't going to get more from another team than our reduced offer so he took it. Carr may feel he can get more than the $4M (hypothetically) or so we may offer him. Maybe we up it to $6M and he stays or maybe we just cut him. I'd wait unti lafter the draft and afterI see how Caliborne is doing and then tell him the offer. Then the choice is his, but he can't get $8M in salary this year after what he has done.

We can get a scrub player to do the same job Carr has done for us so far so if he don't take the cut, then he is cut. I would wait till last minute to have him end up being a last player to figure out a spot on a roster though. I so would be as vindictive as I could with him as we showed him the money and he has showed the Cowboys really nothing but bull shit.

I'm not sure the anger is directed at the right person here. By all accounts Carr is a hard worker and has been a good citizen. Was Brandon Carr supposed to turn down 5yrs/50mil? He shouldn't be screwed over because Jerry was drunk the night he offered Carr that contract. I think the Carr contract was the last contract that Jerry was primarily responsible for. Since that deal we have seen a philosophical shift in the way the front office manages salaries. I attribute that to Stephen taking a more prominent role in the decision making process.

Because he didn't turn down the offer to begin with is no reason to try to hold up the progress of the Cowboys today. My anger is with him now as he won't play ball. It is his right and all but....

I guess that was my point earlier. carr sucks, but he doesnt think he sucked. Why in the world would he agree to a paycut? He already did a backloaded contract and restructured. Plus with our cb situation he probably thinks he can play hardball. I would

What is going through this guy's mind? Does he think he'll get this money elsewhere? Even if you cut his salary in half he's probably overpaid.
