When the season is over I'd schedule a meeting with our core players, Hamilton, MY, Ian, CJ, Napoli, and Nellie and tell them that I want us to be a dynasty and that we want to do what it takes to extend them all through the 2015 season. I'd tell them to think it over, talk to their families and get back to me on what they think is a fair deal. If those guys really want to be here and be part of something special then they'd sign.

Maybe not Nellie.

I agree with the first post. I'd bring Nellie along. I would make sure CJ, Nefety, Elvis, Young, Hamilton, and Ian are there. Maybe Napoli because he seems like the type that wants to be wanted...and if you show loyalty to him he will stick around.

I think Napoli can be a huge part of this team going forward. I would include Nelly in that group because he has contributed so much, but there is no way he is getting a big of a contract as the others due to his injury history and sub-par performance this year. I would like to have him, but think we could possibly upgrade at his position as well.

all of them and Napoli. Nellie needs to start working on a conditioning program that builds up his hamstrings but considering his injuries i wouldn't call his performance sub-par. 29 homers and 87 rbi's is pretty good

Also Cruz is our 7th hitter. Many can't say that there 7th hitter can hit 30 HR and drive in almost 100 RBIs

exactly. Name another 7th hitter in baseball with those numbers.

our priorities should be:

1. Re-sign CJ & Gonzalez

2. Work new contracts for Hamilton, Young, Napoli, Kinsler & Cruz.

3. Look at upgrading the 1st Base position. Moreland is okay but we need someone better offensively & defensively. Pujols would be my choice. not sure about Fielder's fit in the locker room or dugout.

4. Colby is a good post-season pitcher but again we can get someone better. i'm thinking either Darvish or James Shields.

5. drop Oliver and add a 2nd lefty in the bullpen to compliment Gonzalez. maybe Javier Lopez.

There is no way in the world they spend the kind of money in one off season that it would take to sign the players you have listed here.

okay then forget Pujols & Fielder. everything else would work and according to Nolan the Rangers have no problem increasing the payroll from the 92M this season up to 120-130M

So that leaves 28-38 million to sign the other guys..CJ, Hamilton, Kinsler, Cruz, Napoli and and extension for Young. That's going to be hard to do.

they are all under contract for the 2012 season. you work extensions that keep them under contract for at least 3 maybe 4 years beyond 2012. you might even work it so their payroll impact in 2012 lowers a bit. Young is due 16.0M in 2012 & 2013 and would probably agree in the addition of 2 more years on his contract. he might agree to reduce the 1st 2 years impact down to 14M. Hamilton is due 15.25M, so we sign him thru 2015 reducing 2012 to 13M and increasing 1.5M a year. Napoli is due to get 8.25M in 2012 so we sign him thru 2015, reducing 2012 to 7M and increasing by 1.25M a year. Kinsler makes 7.20M in 2012. sign him to 5 years extension worth 62.5M. Cruz is due 4.25M in 2012. sign him to a 3 or 4 year incentive-laced deal at around 6M a year with incentives for number of games played.

The players union, not to mention the players, are going to balk at the word reduction. This is not an NFL salary cap issue. I don't get the idea of extending MY beyond 2013 and based on what MY is getting paid to DH and what CJ may be offered, why would Josh not look for a big payday as a free agent?

without a cap, I doubt you see much reduction. Defer, maybe, but he still gets his money. The hope for me would be that he adds a couple of years at like $4mill because he has gotten so much up front...average out the money per year for him

however it's called. i have seen players take extensions that in the long run saved the team money. i can see players like Young, Hamilton & Napoli doing just that if it means keeping CJ and adding whatever other players we need.

Yeah I know, but a reduction would piss the union off, as someone else mentioned, but a deferment is fine.

On that note, have you ever looked at Ichiro's contract? That is a smart, smart dude. Basically he is having a good chunk of his yearly salary deferred (like $5M) until he retires, but it is gaining team paid interest while he still plays. Brilliant. No need to get the money now and invest it when you can get a guaranteed return on it, and I think the interest rate he was getting was like 5%.

Sounds like you're still confusing football and baseball. This is probably the last big contract that some of these guys are going to see in their careers which makes the old home team discount a reach. Could happen, but it's just as easy to see them going the free agent route as not.

no i'm not confusing baseball & football. you talk like you don't expect the Rangers to keep anybody. i've seen BASEBALL players add multiple years on their deals and spread the money over the years.

on baseball reference.com..the rangers have 66mil guaranteed next year then 33 mil and 17 mil in 2014 they got room to keep the key players and add some ....also look for feldman to be traded and that will clear an extra 6.5 mil next year
