Just another way to make money for the Mariner's ownership. I'll bet the rest of the League is thinking the Seattle Mariner's organization is the laughing stock of Major League Baseball.LOL! I said this last week.

Also when his Hall of Fame 5 year clock starts.I'm wondering how this contractually works. He has a guaranteed 1 year deal to play baseball, if he doesn't retire what happens with that? I can't imagine the MLBPA would allow the Mariners to change the language in the contract. It's confusing how he isn't retiring, nor getting DFA'd, nor going on the IR yet the Mariners can bring someone up to take his roster spot.
As far as the H.O.F. goes, his clock won't start until he actually submits the retirement paperwork which my guess will be done after the Japanese series next March. Just my guess like I said.
I think they agreed that he would step into an office position which negates his baseball contract. Retiring in baseball is actually a paper process which he is not submitting right now making him a free agent technically.

How does it negate his contract though? I thought the only thing any player could do to negate a contract is retire since salaries are fully guaranteed?
I sure don't get it. Jerry says that "Ichiro's presence in the Clubhouse and with the players and staff improves our opportunity to win games". Yeah, right Mr. Dipoto- maybe you should teach Ichiro how to speak English- no doubt that would improve opportunities to win games too. The dude speaks very little English at best. You're better off just keeping your pie hole shut rather than spewing out all the bullshit to try and justify stupid decisions.
He has quit for the season. Retiring refers to end of career. Both end the contract though a buyout of sorts could have been negotiated.
Ok, I've just never heard of someone getting a different role in an organization while not retiring. Plus I've never heard any baseball team talk about activating a player who isn't a player.
