the market is crazy right nowSigned Cishek for the bullpen.
When did relievers become 5mil/year guys?
Everyone is excited for next year? I'm not seeing it.I do give Dipoto credit though, he is like one of those street performers who dazzles you while taking your money. He made so many moves that he got everyone excited for next year even though he never really improved the overall team and he while doing it nobody harped on the fact he never really spent any money. Heck, he might have even lowered the payroll right before our eyes. Congrats Jerry, you are a magician.
i think dipoto put together about as good a team as he could for 2016 without being given any extra budget to work with, and the inheritance of a god awful farm from the idiotic z. i still think we gave up too much for what we got with smith and elias, but even that move isn't as bad to me as to some of my fellow fans.
we have something resembling a real MLB outfield for the first time in a long time, and as i've said previously, i think the next couple of rounds of trades with all of these new pieces we have is where we'll start getting glimpses of what the long-term plan is for simultaneously rebuilding the farm and creating a good MLB roster.
i was talking about trades this summer and beyond. it's going to take a few more rounds before we can put together attractive trade packages to entice other teams to give up what we need. right now all we have that's worth shit is pitching, and we can't really afford to give it up since we also need pitching. catch-22.
and yeah, the m's and nintendo (and pretty much any team, I guess) rarely come out and say much about payroll intent. it's all speculation no matter who says what. i'd bet that dipoto would want to hold off on big spending until he gets this shambles of an organization in decent shape.
i'm not quite as locked in my opinion about the smith/elias trade as you. it was too much, yeah. i think that nobody knows what kind of reliever smith is yet. he's pitched barely 70 innings, and pen success is more ephemeral than any other position in any other sport. there's a long way to go before anything is proven about anything with him, though i suspect he'll be good anywhere he goes.
Still don't get the big picture of the overall moves in the offseason, maybe it's ownership meddling but I just don't get it. Did the big club get better, IMO slightly, but with the contracts and ages are set up its basically the Mariners have to win the WS by 2017 or destroy the whole thing again. By the time we can see how his draft picks are doing in the minors this will be like the 2003 Mariners, just old dudes
I have to keep reminding myself how much of a shit show Jack Z made this organization and that Dipoto has to work around the mess he inherited.
Short term? Expiration date? No future? All of this means shit to me anymore, I want to win NOW! I don't care if it's just this one year, the future can kiss my ass when I have watched almost every game since the last time we made the playoffs. It's time for a playoff series, I am so tired of watching a losing team. Unlike most years with any of our Seattle teams the future no longer comes into the picture for me and my goals as a fan. Lets win now and worry about the future when we have sniffed a playoff series; it's been way too long!! I find this team to be much better than what we fielded opening day last year, Lloyd is gone (still a ? at skipper), and it feels for once that we have a major league team surrounding our stars. Personally, I am excited for what this year will bring whether the future looks bleak or not.
