Nope.Have you read the book?
That is pretty awful to put her through all that. I would have liked to have seen what she was doing beforehand to see if that kind of torture was warranted or led to a better product. We've already discussed it a bit here not long ago, but regarding Duvall's performance there is an interesting story.
Kubrick wanted her to convey utter helplessness and a complete breakdown so he would often call her in the middle of the night to wake her and just remain silent on his end. He told the crew not to include her or sympathize with her so she was as isolated as possible. No one was to complement her work, or socialize with her.
*The famous "Give me the bat Wendy" scene was done at least 127(!) times (Kubrick was famous for doing many, many takes)
In addition to having to cry on demand for 12 hours a day for over a bunch of days, her hands were basically just bloody blisters after that scene.
The "Here's Johnny" scene took over 3 days and over 60 doors.
Duvall was a wreck during the 13 months on set. She lost a bunch of weight (which she couldn't afford to lose) and her hair started falling out.
I'm not a huge Duvall fan (the only other role of hers I remember liking is in Popeye) but when I heard about what she went through I viewed her performance in a different light.
Also of note is that the portrayals of both Jack and Wendy were the 2 biggest issues Stephen King had with the movie (that and probably the ending). Jack was supposed to descend into madness, not start there, and Wendy was supposed to be strong. But King's version has shown that maybe the author shouldn't always be given control of the product.
Much more importantly I hope the covid situation is under control for you. Sending best wishes to ya man!
Contagion is a good one.@Blackshirts BLVD
Just checking to make sure you are ok and covid ain't f'n with ya too much.
(I tried to pm you but it keeps telling me I can't specifically to you for some reason.)
Either way, you can watch this to freak you out!
I can see a lot of folks liked it! Which makes it all a bit baffling to me since I typically enjoy the "thinky" and the "artsy" stuff.
You say "dissect a perfect family" but the family seemed so robotic with a hint of dislike that I just assumed from the start that they all hated each other.
I would have liked a 15-20 minute short of this one but a full 2 hours of intentionally emotionally dead inside acting by everyone just killed it for me.
Thank you for this... That's all I was thinking about when watching that halftime show. I was very confused.Did the half time show remind you of this too?
Thelma Vs Louise.
I haven't seen Lobster. With my reaction to TKoaSD maybe it will just be a director that I personally just can't connect with.I liked it a lot... but still thought the Lobster was better... Both similarly dialogued... but that is the intention... very weird movies...
Yeah. It is a valid criticism of The Shining, but trying to ease Nicholson into craziness just isn't easy!Nope.

I will say that I as well thought that Jacks descent into madness seemed to move a little fast. We had a decent moment when Danny went to get his fire truck and saw him sitting on the bed. A few more moments like that with gradual escalation would have played nicely. Or some more humanizing moments like when Jack first went off on Duvall when she came in when he was typing, I think if we later saw him apologize for that outburst, it would have showed how the place is having an effect on him rather than just make him an asshole. We know the place is having an impact on Jack, but it never truly feels that way until he starts hallucinating. I also REALLY wanted more from the initial exchange between Jack and the previous caretaker when he confronts him in the bathroom - really felt that was a missed opportunity.
I am just kind of ranting at this point. I also rewatched Doctor Sleep and I liked that as well (as I have reviewed before), but it doesn't feel connected to The Shining. They are two completely different movies with two completely different styles with a few overlapping details. Again, still good, but doesn't feel like a sequel, feels more stand-alone.
As for covid, not sure I can complain. My experience hasn't been too bad, mostly exhausted all the time with head and body aches. One weird feeling I had that no one told me about was this feeling of fullness. I haven't eaten or drank much the past week because I felt full the whole time and/or like I was going to throw up as a result. Because of that I believe I am dehydrated now as well, as I feel SO dizzy today. but still the best I have felt the past week. All in all, I would say that I feel like 60% today.
Lol! I couldn't get anyone to watch it during this pandemic. When I described to everyone that it is probably the most realistic depiction of a viral outbreak then no one wanted anything to do with it!Contagion is a good one.
Yeah idk, when all that stuff happened, for some reason I had to go through and reconfirm my email address. I think everything is back to normal now.
