Yea after the initial scene with the boy being ripped off the bike it drags you through some character building & developing the conflicts amongst the family. Have to admit I'm not a big fan of Helen Hunt's acting ability. Much like her face, everything she does looks fake.

Yeah she was attractive back in the day but her face is as stiff as a board. Not crazy about her acting as well

A Spanish movie with English dialogue. Two people on a platform, they drop a platform of food, depending on how high you are on the chain the more food available. If you are too low on the levels, well, you might have to resort to other ways to get food.

Not sure if this movie was mentioned but I saw The Turning last night. Not really into the supernatural/ghost kind of plot but it was okay. My wife loved it so if you are into those kind of movies I suggest you watch this one. Some jump scares but I feel it was one of those movies that you keep waiting and waiting for something very dramatic to happen and it just never happens. I will say that ending just makes you wonder, sometimes that can be good, sometimes not...didn't care for it this time lol.

Not bad in terms of entertainment, and I agree that I felt like the movie didn't develop itself into anything good. That dramatic moment you are talking about... Just never came. Felt like a waste of an opportunity given all the buildup.

Saw IT Chapter 2. It was fun but like too many horror movies today they missed the mark on scary at a lot of points by making it overly cartoonish.

Example, in the original IT, for me the scariest scene is when adult Bev goes back to her childhood home and the scene ends with her father's rotting corpse chasing her out of the house.

In this one it's some weird 12 foot tall blob of a woman with about 20 mouths all over it's body for some reason that chases her out.

Vivarium (2020)


This movie was frustrating. The setup had a certain Twilight Zone flavor, and featured a fantastically unnerving house-hunting sequence where we are first introduced to 'Martin' & go on the suburban tour. Doesn't take long for the progression to get into the core material. It features some decent dry humor in both the dialogue & visual gags, but the tone shifts quickly away from it. What I found to be most frustrating was, by the end of the film, in hindsight it felt as though there wasn't anything very compelling about this movie and eventually it wasted itself away serving no purpose. Much like the entirety of its mundane runtime, the movie develops into such a flat & boring climax. Serving the allegorical purpose of some sort of meaningless life cycle filled with social & societal pitfalls. Everything you WANT to happen, just doesn't. There's zero suspense. There's no payoff. It's just a weird movie with weird symbolism & allegory, and a general sense of weirdness. It's flat out dull.

I liked the suburban hell setting. They paid a lot of CG/fx attention to the setting to over-stylize it and give us a sense of altered reality. Although a tad cartoonish, it was a nice touch. It added mystery, intrigue & boosted the creepy value.

The acting wasn't bad. The performances matched the blandness of the plot, so I think they achieved exactly what they wanted. The mystery child was creepy AF, giving us some promise as to the direction of this movie. The child grows too fast, has the creepiest manchild voice, is outrageously needy, always hungry, spiteful & downright annoying. You always get the feeling of something grander, and more malevolent going on. But sadly the payoff just never arrived and the overall purpose of everything you just watched feels like it was a waste of time.

If you're interested in a bland societal metaphor about suburban hell, then this is the movie for you. The mystery doesn't give you much of a payoff as the unnerving excitement in the early goings leads nowhere. Almost as if the movie just wanted to be weird for the sake of being weird, and nothing more. It leaves you feeling drained & empty. I think the writer & director achieved exactly what it set out to accomplish, but I couldn't help but feel like it was a waste of time. The ending could have given us something.... more... something better... something redeemable without disconnecting from its vague allegorical purpose.

Frustratingly empty experience... 4.5/10

Favor (2013) - Independent, but fairly well acted with a lot of humor. And it builds nicely. More thriller.

Creep (2014) - Also independent, very dark movie, slow to get going, but does build a good feeling of dread to the end.

House of the Devil (2009) - This one is really old, but good. Pretty typical satanic cult shit, but well acted and great 80s feel.

The Hunted (2013)


This low budget found-footage film was somewhat effective early on, even if by the end it felt like utter low-budget nonsense. There was a decent Blair Witch vibe to it from the early goings. Subtle shakes to the camera, sound fx boosts, unsettling screams at night, strange 'discoverings' (staged props). Felt very reminiscent of the original The Blair Witch Project (1999). All it needed was some creepy stick figures hanging in the trees. However by the end of the film it just flops. It didn't dare to achieve anything outside of its comfort zone. If your idea of a scary film is merely hearing a poltergeist woman scream bloody murder & move stuff in the woods at night, then give this one a go. But I think you'd be better served going camping with a lady friend and telling her to surprise scream at you randomly. That would probably be more exciting.

The acting was decent. I hope Josh Stewart was paid handsomely for this nonsense, because I'm not sure why he would have signed up for this amateur hour crap.

Someone on IMDB wrote a review titled: "2 men, 1 angry orgasm"... After crying with laughter I completely agreed with that statement. In their review they said: "the hysterical factor is that that after well over an hour you literally realise you're watching two men run from the sound of an impressive orgasm. Maybe that doesn't sound like I'm dating normal people, and I'm fine with that. I'm more concerned that I had the patience to watch this garbage to the end." I concur and will have to use that review title for my signoff on this review. Just too perfect lol.

This movie was a shameless plug for me. As a hunter myself, it was an easy sell. I tried to give it some credit but it was incredibly difficult. My 3.5/10 rating is being a bit philanthropic, so don't be surprised if you think its worse.

The Turning (2020)


This movie was an ok watch up until the last 10 minutes or so. It had a decent gothic atmosphere due to the setting and made good use of lighting to capture it, but it also had good progression to give it a dreadful feeling. Majority of the scares were cheap thrills & jump-scares that didn't add anything unique or memorable. But honestly there was very little scare factor. Mostly just the nanny seeing weird things and herself being unnerved, the kids acting a little weird, then waking up from a dream. None of the terror her character felt translated to the audience.

Where this film really falters is in the climax. It was an ambitious idea to go against the grain with a climactic twist that offered very little in terms of explanation. But sadly it just didn't quite work for me. My reaction: "Oh, ok... umm I guess its over". My wife's reaction: "What the f*ck? That literally explains nothing." It just flat out didn't make much sense nor did we feel like the previous 80 minutes implored us to make any justifications for it. It didn't explain what was happening with the kids, nor the 'hauntings'. Could have been so much better IMO. Felt as though post-production cuts botched it. Didn't even get to see the spider crawl out of Miles' mouth like in the trailer. Plus it felt as though there were numerous scenes that seemed out of order and didn't make any sense.

The acting was pretty good. I'm not the biggest fan of Finn Wolfhard as I think his shtick has run its course, but mainly I just don't find him very menacing. I'm becoming more of a fan of Mackenzie Davis after every movie I see with her. She has a good Sarah Paulson vibe to her, but sadly this movie didn't capitalize on her talent.

Not bad in terms of entertainment. The movie just fails to develop itself into anything good. You feel as though you keep waiting for dramatic moments to stir up the plot or intensify things, but it never happens. And the climax just pulls the rug out from underneath you. Felt like a big waste of an opportunity given all the buildup.

Break (2019)


Didn't catch it from the trailer my first time, but quickly figured out this was a foreign film (Russia) featuring subpar English dubbing lol. Wasn't so bad that it deterred me from watching though, just made some of the more tense dialogue delivery come off as laughable. Not exactly sure if the script was to blame or the inevitable "lost in translation". Some languages simply do not translate well into English, unless you have a very thoughtful & experienced translator. My guess is whoever dubbed this film did the absolute bare minimum. But thankfully a survival thriller of this nature doesn't necessarily demand a good script. I was a fan of Adam Green's Frozen (2010) and this film looked similar enough for me to want to watch.

The writers & director made creative use of aerial cinematography & scenescapes of the Russian mountain ranges to really heighten the experience (pun intended). The suspenseful moments propelled the story along to make it an entertaining watch, however it lacks the suspense or realism to make it a truly frightening experience. Some moments just came off as avoidable or dumb. The film offers very little for the audience to connect with the characters, and the acting did us no favors. Felt like they could have benefited from giving us more runtime with meaningful characters (Denis deserved better), instead of the 2 annoying ones that inevitably die. It made the experience a little more hard to swallow than it could have been. The sequencing that got them trapped and the climax weren't very believable, but that's nitpicking.

Decent entertainment though and has some great scenery & CG. Bad acting, badly translated script, and shoddy progression but still very watchable. Frozen was a much better film overall if you're looking for a survival thriller about being stuck on a chairlift/gondola. Not just because of wolves being scary as sh!t, because this film still offers a frighteningly realistic plot, but because the progression, characters & climax were more believable.

Decent attempt, but lacks just about everywhere... 5/10

Yeah some jump scares but to me it wasn't that scary, end made it even worse. Gotta say, these horror movies that have come out recently have been for the most part pretty disappointing. That's why I will always venture towards thriller/action personally.
