Not that simple....even if you just bet on your own team to win, it distorts your incentives. Do you try harder in games you bet on? Do you burn your bullpens in those games? And the real danger is if you are a degenerate gambler like that (and you are if you take that risk) you'll end up owing some not very classy people a lot of money and perhaps then they ask you to do things to pay them back.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they should make gambling legal and he shouldn't be seriously punished (which he has been), but as it is baseball has many, many other perverse incentives as it is. You have contract incentives, vesting options and all kind of other factors that may make the front office convince a manager to use certain players in certain situations that may not give them their best chance of winning. And if that manager has made bad financial decisions completely unrelated to gambling he may still make those decisions he knows are not the best ones for the game he is managing in order to keep his job.
