The Skins would have to put the Franchise tag on Cousins or overpay him for one credible year as the starting QB. Is it worth taking that gamble?

Remember we are talking about a team who picked up the 5th year option on another guy who only had one good year and manages to get injured taking a dump these days. Cousins at a market deal for a starter over the next four years is a bargain if for no other reason that we dont cringe each and every time he gets hit.

So could the Skins get another QB?? Sure we could.

Can we find one thats right now a better fit for the team AND puts the team in a better position over the next 3-4 years?? I doubt it

I'd say its more a half season. A great half season, but a half season moreso than a season. The Skins have very little choice far as taking the gamble though. Unless KC completely shits the bed in the playoffs and the Skins get ass paddled Sunday, and I'm not sure that would be enough. It was that great a half season that saw KC break or come close to numerous Redskin passing records for a season.

Some, as you have, might opine that the Skins should franchise him, but that has its own risks as well. If he has another great season next year he'll really want some bank come 2017. Whatever the Skins choose to do though. Its gonna cost em. It might cost them a whole lot for one year, a whole lot for one year, then even more for the next four years or so. Or a whole lot for the next 4 years or so.

At this point, I'd rather they go for the whole lot for the next four years or so. I think Cousins is trending towards having the goods to be a legit NFL QB. Possibly a year in, year out, top 10 QB for the next 7 - 10 years.

You mean those two guys who are very likely to be demoted back to the bench in their teams next game? At least those are the rumors as long as Manning and Dalton are healthy enough to return.

Word has leaked that the main reason Shannahan got fired was because he wanted to start Kirk. And the problem with saying MS gets a better look based on Kirks performance is... no one is going to hire Mike the GM.

I think that with the recent firing of Kelly absolutely no NFL team will hire someone as coach and GM (or pseudo GM). This just doesn't work in today's NFL. This is also why you likely won't see this ex-SB coaches (Cower, Jon Gruden, etc) return to the NFL since in all likelihood they will demand this type of power as part of their deal. This league is too complicated for one person to assume this type of role.

BTW - this doesn't include an ex-SB coach like Shanahan who has already returned to the NFL w/another team. He has been humbled & will be more than willing to accept a coach only role.

Cousins is having a good year but he isn't irreplaceable.

OK - please name me a realistic replacement. Anyhow - doesn't matter the Redskins will re-sign him to a longer term deal. You are just trying to stir up the pot as a Cowboys fan now that your season has officially been declared a complete disaster. Thanks for contributing.

I certainly hope he is not referring to this part of one of his replies:

I know you guys want names that you can then shoot down basically because, if I'm understanding you all correctly, Kirk is irreplaceable. ( Just think of guys like McCarron and McGloin)

McCarron? Seriously? I hardly even recognized the name of the other guy. I guess that these guys had a similar pedigree from college but that means squat in the NFL. That is like saying any so-so QB from Michigan will be the next Tom Brady.

With Cousins the Redskins now have a somewhat proven QB & certainly one worth the risk of a big contract. Certainly there are no guarantees, but the odds are significantly better than taking a major chance with someone else's throwaways.

I am a system guy. KC works in this system but I don't think he would be good in a Bruce Arians system or throwing to a guy like Calvin Johnson. KC is not a prototypical QB. He is very good in this system and this is where he belongs. I also think he knows that.

Heh @ great outlet mall. It was pretty sweet at one time. Its dying a slow death now though. I have a few homies that are Skins fans, but the 2 closest big groups I know of is one down in LA and another within a Native American tribe, the Timbisha Shoshone, out near Death Valley. I have a son with a babe who's from that tribe.

Way too far for both of us! Too bad. I knew of some folks that gathered to watch Redskins games at local sports bars before Sunday Ticket came out, but can't locate any such groups now!

Where do you live? I lived in Orange County until three years ago when my job moved me to the South. If you live anywhere near LA you really should go to Joxer Dalys in Culver City for the Redskins-Packers game. I am sure that the place will be insane on Sunday. IMO - this place is the best Redskins bar in the country and full of lots of crazy Redskins fans.

I think I made it in my comment. Will check back in 3 years. Unless we do decide we can get McCarron or Osweiler cheaper and go that route instead.

I work in Downtown LA but live out in the IE. I will have to check that bar out! Also, if we ever do somehow face the Cardinals, I may have to make a road trip to Glendale again.

Actually I'm trying to understand why so many Skins fans are on the Cousins bandwagon.

Are you kidding me? By the way, did you know the line in your signature "Let 'Er Rip" was the title of the SI cover when Rypien won Superbowl XXVI?

I'll give you an answer you can relate to... think back to 2006 when Romo was named the starter. IF you have dealt with a revolving door of QBs for the past ten years, and all of a sudden one comes in who is simply supposed to be a place holder til you can find the next guy. Only he all of a sudden starts playing like he just might be able to be the guy..... Im sure you remember that time.
