They are making this a major project in Edmonton in the hopes of revitalizing the downtown core (which if you have even been to Edmonton needs a ton of work in that area). Not only a spanky new arena, but a casino, restaurants, shopping etc. Sure I like to pick on Edmonton, but I hope it ends up well for them.

It used to be that way, jstew, but they've really added a ton of hi-rise condos in downtown Calgary combined with trendy restaurants and night clubs in the last 10 to 15 years. Prior to that, you're right, it was like a ghost town after dark.

I lived just on the cusp of downtown. it was a ghost town back in the day. no clue what its like now but if I were to go back in time I would live just behind 17th ave
