The Seahawks have declined to exercise guard James Carpenter's fifth-year contract option for the 2015 season.

Thoughts?

Per NBCSports:

Carpenter will remain under contract for 2014, but will thus be available for free agency in 2015, and the Seahawks could still keep him around.

For now, the team simply had decided that it would be too expensive to keep him around in 2015 under the fifth-year option salary of more than 7 million.

Its a good move. Might motivate him to play harder and to stay healthy.

I think it's a good idea. Pete and John aren't going to hit on all their draft picks.

All I can say is ...no shit, he's not worth that option. 7 million ? Does anybody on this board think he worth half of that? I don't think so.

Since he was part of the 2011 draft class and that was the new CBA year, teams were given the right to exercise an option for a fifth year for these 2011 players. But obviously it was for crazy amounts depending on how their contracts were structured.

His salary for 2014 will be 1.4 mil. But if they exercised the fifth year option, it would of cost them a whopping 7+ mil in 2015.

So by declining this, they aren't on the hook for all that needless cap destruction. And gives us max flexibility as the team and Carpenter could agree on a new deal anytime leading up to his FA.

This also means were dealing with the last of the legacy stuff from the previous CBA. All that's cleaned up.

Smart of SEA not to pick up the option. He's TERRIBLE! And for 7 mil, he has done nothing to justify the 1.4 mil he will earn this year let alone 7 mil.

We would have all thought JS and PC drank a whole case of stupid if they had picked up that option. He has been a bust. Let him know now that he either kicks in a different gear and finally gets his shit together or not only is he out on his ass, but good luck finding any real value in another contract elsewhere.

The message is clear to me. Shit or get off the pot.

Any bets on that he arrives at camp in shape and at the weight they told him be at?

He definitely has control over his attitude/desire to succeed and what kind of physical and mental shape he comes into camp in. What he doesn't have complete control over is injuries. Sure, there are preventable injuries that can be avoided by getting into and staying in shape, but there are other injuries that just being in shape can't do anything to prevent. Hopefully he comes into camp in shape and with a good attitude towards trying to win a job and is lucky enough not to get hurt again.

Yea no brainer. Very few guards are worth that IMO. If he turns it around and plays well this year then we can sign him to a new deal that is less then 7mil per year.

This is about the biggest non-story I've ever read. A 1st round bust on par with Aaron Curry (just diff. circumstances getting them on the field) does not have a ridiculous cap hit option exercised. Exercised... that's a word this fat fuck should add to his vocab.

What a joke.

7 Million? Wasn't aware it was that much. Yeah, this is a non-story.

He's not even worth the 1.4 mil! I say let him walk and draft his replacement.

I would love to see JC get replaced by a better LG, but this might not be the year to do it. We just lost a starting RT and our most versatile backup in McQ.
1.4M is still cheap and I hope we draft a LG to compete at that spot. I am sure we will, but probably in the later rounds.

It appears Cable and PC are confident that Bailey and Bowie will be playing a bigger role in the line this year, but we are still looking real thin on the right side.

It's a very thick draft for OLine this year, but will be interesting what gets taken with our 1st and 2nd, because 4th may be a bit late to gamble on landing a Lineman that could help in 2014.
