now that I've got my thinking cap on, what would you or anyone consider later rounds ?

would it be 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round ?
5th, 6th, 7th for me. 3rd and 4th are the "middle" rounds, and I'd consider 1st and 2nd "early" rounds.

But that's just me, different people may include the 4th round as "late rounds" and maybe some wouldn't include the 5th, opting to lump it into the "mid rounds" instead.

Maybe we should put it to a vote. 'Merica.

Oh man. You're gonna make me bust this classic quote out again?

Lions had the top run D last year, not the Ravens. Yes, it was all because of Suh. No, the Lions will not have the top run D again this year with Ngata.
Why not? Suh was good against the run, but was a better pass rusher. There's no reason our run defense should take any hit due to Suh's departure. It's the interior pass rush he provided that will be impossible to duplicate with any one single DT...

More wishful thinking on your part then Tim Twentymans.

The only way this ends up being true is if the Lions are so far ahead in games that they can just sit back and defend the pass and let teams run.

Ngata is not better than Suh at defending the run. That's wishful thinking.

Ngata certainly isn't in Suh's class against the pass but he is known for his run stuffing abilities. Hell, until last season, maybe the season before, Suh was catching a lot of flack for overpursuing RBs and missing his gap. Or have you forgotten how San Fran ran it right down his throat like 50 times with the same play? If Ngata still has it and one of these kids can effectively replace Mosley we may be better against the run.

Even if you want to just go by stats, Ngata isn't in the conversation.

Statistically speaking (which started this debate), Last season, Suh was ranked No. 2 against the run behind Dareus.

In 2013, he was 17th. Harrison was No. 1 that season, and Miami’s Randy Starks was No. 6.

In 2012, Suh was graded 78th of 85th defensive tackles against the run. His pass rushing that season was No. 2 at his position.

In 2011, Suh was No. 73 against the run. In his rookie season, he was No. 59.

There’s no doubt that Suh’s all-around game has vastly improved. He was always considered a top pass rusher at his position — his 36 sacks are the most in the NFL for a defensive tackle since he entered the league in 2010.

But his run defense has steadily evolved to the point where he’s considered the league’s top run stopper. The Dolphins are banking on it.

There a huge reason the run defense should and will take a huge hit. Ngata is not Suh. Ngata plays over 20% less snaps than Suh. It's night and day.

You brought up stats. Statistically, Suh ranked 2nd against the run and 1st against the pass. There's just no replacing that, especially with an aging Ngata.

What statistics are we talking about? Tackles? TFL? If we are talking about PFF rankings, those aren't statistics.

You can reference anything you like. Under no circumstances is Ngata better or equal to Suh at anything in 2015. Complete nonsense.

Suh was playing 3 tech(1 gap pass rusher) in a wide 9 during that 9er game in Austins system he played 2 tech(2 gap run stopper) where he excelled not only covering both his gaps but still getting a ton of QB pressures, hits, and sacks. His play last season was far superior to anything Ngata has ever done as a run stopper or pass rusher even when Ngata was in his long past prime.

And what were Ngata's numbers during these season?

Ngata played in a 3-4 most of his career so it's still apples and oranges. Suh's run defense was fantastic once he got in Austin's system. We'll see what it does for Ngata.

Suh improved against the run in Austin's system. It was also his first year not playing in the wide 9. I guess we will see this year which played a bigger part in his improvement.

Suh is better than Ngata. Ngata is also transitioning from a 3-4. All of this speculation is irrelevant until the games are played.

Being a Lions fan I'd prefer the optimism.
