Haloti Ngata: I’ve never been part of a defense like Detroit’s

While Ngata isn’t the pass rusher Suh is, he’s better than Suh against the run. That’s a staple of this defense. Everything else they do is predicated on stopping the run.

Quandre Diggs, Josh Wilson and Nevin Lawson are all serious upgrades over Cassius Vaughn in the slot, so that’s one area where the Lions are going to be even stronger on defense.

Those two quotes stand out the most to me out of that bunch. Even without Suh, if we can improve against the run and improve in the secondary, then our defense should still be an elite unit...

Those points are logical. However, that is assuming all key cogs on defense stay healthy. If Quin, slay or Mathis miss any significant time. It will be another story all together

I really liked Longhorn Malcom Brown

Does Bleacher Report have HIM ranked in the Top 400?

Huh? Do they!?!

(I'm assuming they didn't rank rookies. Or I wouldn't be so cocky aboot my boy Tyruns ranking dominance.)

I seriously did like that signing btw.

As Mayhew himself said, "best fucking FA signing since David Akers."

1 positive outlook you should have is that Mayhew didn't draft a DT in the 1st round..

I would of taken Brown over Tomlinson any day. You can draft any small school OT and move him inside to G and get a nice player in the later rounds.

I had a similar outlook before the draft. I think they felt Wright would be a steal in the mid rounds so they were not concerned. I trust Austin completely at this point so I am not too disappointed.

Ngata is not better than Suh at defending the run. That's wishful thinking.

I don't think the 2nd round counts as a later-round conversion. Most of the best tackle-conversions, just like Marpet, get snapped up fairly early on. I don't disagree with Thndr's premise that 2nd-tier tackles do make good guards, but I also have no issue with taking the draft's best natural guard late in the 1st round like we did, either. Good safe pick, imo... Tomlinson should be both an immediate and also a long-term starter.

Are we talking by the actual numbers and statistics, or is he not better by the bias eyeball test?

Oh man. You're gonna make me bust this classic quote out again?

That right there sums up probably 75% of the arguments on this board. Media attention and flashy stats are used by too many here (and far too often, at that) to determine who the "best" players are.

I call it the Shady McCoy effect- he's a good RB for sure, but in a league with very few truly elite backs, the media has built McCoy up to be better than he is, and fantasy football junkies eat that right up because he has immense value in FF. Imo, he's far more valuable in FF than in real football...

Lions had the top run D last year, not the Ravens. Yes, it was all because of Suh. No, the Lions will not have the top run D again this year with Ngata.

now that I've got my thinking cap on, what would you or anyone consider later rounds ?

would it be 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round ?

I wish people would stop equating that the run on OG in rounds 4 thru 6 implies that it's easy to find a one suitable just for the mere fact of the quantity that are drafted.

I've also read the same damn statements regarding LB's in that you can find one in later rounds.

No doubt that you can draft them in those rounds but the quality isn' t always there.

and don't even bother to me how many have failed that were drafted in rounds 1 through 3.

and furthermore, good luck in trying to find a OG in rounds 4 and 5 this past draft that the Lions could have actually drafted with their own pick.

Tomlinson was arguably the best OG in this draft. Plain and Simple. Hopefully he will bring a smile to LionsTop1 face.

Glad he is a LION...
