Freddie Sanchez was a diehard doggie fan. And he preached it just a few days after the end of the 2010 World Series. Romo comes from a long line of HUGE Dodger fans, and has been very open about it. Eric Burns never played for the Giants, yet he was such a big Giants fan as a kid, he is probably most associated with the Giants than any other team he ever played for.

Why the eff would they just jettison him?

Please answer.

The SFGiants have announced they will honor Hunter Pence on the club’s Wall of Fame on Sept. 17. Pence is one of the organization’s most beloved players and played a huge part in two World Series championships.
Just looked at his stats, interesting career. Mid 2012 not much production regular season but that huge moment in the Reds series...2013 was brilliant, a near great season, really good all around player. 2014 almost as good, a notch below. Then not much.

Also interesting, played all 162 in both 2013 and 2014. Does that even happen anymore?

But what a great Giant...who doesn't miss big personalities on this team? We got NO one with any flavor.

I mean...right in the top of the BR page...Captain Underpants LOL ^^^^^

What do you mean. Yaz‘s heart beats at lest 3 times, EVERY day.
You forgot the biggest problem on this team - lack of EZs. Sure, there is Luis GonzalEZ but who else? AlvarEZ is injured (probably Cain's fault). MercedEZ got sent down (probably Cain's spincter's fault) and RodriguEZ hasn't been called up yet (I'm going with Whiteside's fault). AIE AIE AIE!!! This is no good! Bunch of JAs running the ship, lead by Ms. Management. Bring back the EZs and it will be all good!

Had a conversation with a co-worker who is a big Dodgers' fan. She asked if I thought FZ would work out for the Giants, meaning that he would be able to build a contender. I expressed my doubt and then she said that she doesn't think he'll work out for the Giants.

An interesting, brief conversation that I thought to share with you all.

Top starting pitchers in MLB in fWAR this season:

1. Sandy Alcántara/Carlos Rodón/Kevin Gausman - 4.4 fWAR
4. Max Fried - 4.3 fWAR
5. Justin Verlander/Aaron Nola - 4.0 fWAR

Imagine if we had kept Gaus and also signed Rodon....

That would have been nice, but totally 20/20 hindsight. I was 100% OK with letting Gas walk. And iirc, most here were also ok with that.

oh, for sure. Me too. I think it's more likely than not that the Gaus contract becomes a disaster.

I am not nearly as convinced of this as I was 6 months ago. My concerns were mainly around his “collapse” in the second half last year. He hadn’t shown, over a long term, that he was an elite pitcher before joining the Gs in ‘20. But given what we now know…

He was a big prospect, so those “in the know” thought he at least had the potential, early on, to be a top SP.

He realized some of that potential in ‘20 and the first halves of ‘21 and ‘22.

He had family issues (his newborn child had health issues, iirc) around the time of the ‘21 ASB. This could legit explain his performance drop at that time.

Per fangraphs, 1 WAR is worth approx 8.5M in ‘22 (for 2+ WAR players). Therefore, for Gas’ 110M contract, he needs to accumulate approx 14 WAR over it’s life. In the first 2/3 season, per BBRef, he has 2.3 WAR (approx 20M worth). So he only needs to accrue approx 11 WAR over the remainder of his time in Toronto to “break even”. I don’t think that is too tall an order.

I agree on all points. What I was concerned about were these two scenarios:

1. He gets hurt and misses significant time. A risk for all contracts but I thought a more than small risk at the time for Gaus.
2. He accumulates a nice couple years of WAR (say 4.0 this year and next) and then, in his mid 30s, becomes ineffective. You are on the hook for 24M/24M/23M of essentially "dead money"

I mean, grab the bag Kevin. By all means. It was just too much risk for me.
