The only reasoning I can see is that they thought he could get a long term deal on the market, and would rather overpay for a short deal (in this case 2 years) than be stuck with his contract for a longer term (say, 5 years).

Even if it weren't, I would say no go. They see him play as much as any other team, and, as such, they have to see the major regression in numbers for him.

Yea, Lincecum was paid $14M, 18M, and 22M the past 3 seasons, so it's not as if he was making chump change and they decided to make things fair to make up for underpaying him all those years.

I think how this will shape the contracts other pitchers on the market this year. He did take less than he has been making so there is some loyalty there which is good to see. But pitchers like Shark with the cubs will expect this scale.
