I have always believed you cannot win in baseball by spending money on 2 players and then going cheap on the other 23. I believe you have to spread the wealth so to say because money usually means value. Based on some A.L. numbers, this is what I came up with.
AL Central
Chicago $30.8M @ $91.2M = 34%
Cleveland $28.5M @ $82.5M = 35%
Detroit $42M @ $162.2M = 26%
KC $24.8M @ $92M = 27%
Minn $25M @ $85.8 = 29%
AL East
Baltimore $28.5M @ $107.4M = 27%
Boston $32.2M @ $162.8M = 20%
NY $47.4M @ $203.8M = 23%
TB $24M @ $77M = 31%
Toronto $35M @ $132.6M = 26%
AL West
Texas $41M @ $136M = 30%
Oakland $20.5M @ $83.4M = 25%
Angels $40.4M @ $155.7M= 26%
Houston $19.9M @ $44.5M = 45%
Mariners $47.5M @ $92M = 52%
What this means. First number is top two players salaries combined for each team in millions. @ is total team payroll. = means percent of payroll dedicated to top two salaries on team. We are the only team in the 50's. Houston is only team in 40's and there are only 4 teams in the 30's. My point has always been that paying Cano $24M is fine if your payroll is $150M+. It is redic if your payroll is below $100M. At 30%, we should have a payroll at $156M which is about AL average.
Not science by any means, but just having some fun with numbers.
