Votto was putting up better power numbers than Goldschmidt last year.

I look at overall numbers... I don't like playing the "what if" game and projecting the numbers they'd put up IF they were healthy. Maybe that's just me though.

This isn't based on a single season. What Votto did in 2010, 2011, 2012 should out weigh what Goldschmidt did last season

I didn't know we were going all the way back to 2010... well Goldys minor league numbers were pretty impressive... JK. I'm not sure how this whole belt thing works but all I'm saying is if you combine the last 2 seasons number wise and compare the two players Goldy looks like the better 1B to me. I'm just defending my guy.

I'm just saying Votto has been at the very top of 1B for the last 4 plus years, PG's season last year wasn't nearly enough to take away from Votto, this season isn't even over yet.

I think what hurt (in his HOF voting, etc) is that he didn't have an extended amount of dominance..I'd say he probably had 4-5 great seasons, and the rest was just good (by 1B standards)....and for a guy with only 13 full seasons, you'd probably wanna see more dominance to compensate.

How good does he have to be? Cepeda's first 7 years he averages (not 162 g, but averages) 152 g (4 of those seasons were 154 g seasons) 92 r, 32 2B, 32 HRs, 107 RBI, 314 TB OPS+ 141, That's a 7 year run. Anyone other 1B, from 58-64 that dominant? I doubt it. Cepeda then is the unanimous MVP in 67.

Like I say, he is under the radar. His HOF selection was well deserved.

I like Gammon's criteria on what he looks for when voting for HOFers (one of the few things I'll agree with him on)...at least 8 great seasons and at least a handful of good seasons in addition, unless there was some otherwise otherworldly dominance, where you can get away with less.

Looking at Cepeda's career, I don't see 8 'great' seasons...his 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1967 are all great seasons, but I don't consider his 1959, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1970 to be great by 1B.corner OF standards...they were good.

The overall body of work doesn't strike me as a HOFer

I just have to disagree with you there... Goldy has been better than Votto the past two seasons now. Sure Votto missed 50 games or however many it was but still, number wise Goldy has been better than Votto for 2 straight years. I don't see how he's not the champ this year.

He was not better than Votto last year by any stretch of the imagination. And it's not like Votto's having a bad year this year, and Votto's been great since 2010, whereas Goldschmidt just started building his track record last year.

and really not doing a good job of it...unless you argue June 1st 2013 to present...then you have a chance.
