Baggs seems to think the Giants will work out extensions for both Cain and MadBum within the week

Also, in this article, I didn't realize that Kevin Brown is the only other right hander to sign a +$100 million contract (13 YEARS AGO!). Matt Cain is expected to be the second in MLB history.

I'm thinking Cain gets 5 years $100 million and Bum gets a 4 year $10 million Cain-like deal (the one he signed in '07).

If these deals happen, we have to find a way to rep Sabean.

Consensus around the league is that The Giants won't be able to hold onto Timmeh, Cain, AND Bum long term. If you're Sabean, and you can keep only two of them, which two would you keep?

It is a hypothetical, so I'll bite.

I would keep Bum and Cain. Cain is durable. Bum has "Ace" written all over him. More payroll flexibility.

Of course, we should keep them ALL, but if finances are in the way, I reluctantly jettison Timmeh. :peep:

Fire away, people!

I sadly agree. And this is unfortunately the most likely scenario. Maybe tzill can give us a rundown of the Giants payroll going forward. Even with Zito coming off the books, I just don't see how you keep three stud starters longterm and still fill all the other holes. Of course, if Brown, Panik, and others pan out, perhaps there is a way after all.

Well, we do lose Zeets and Huffer.

The Philth have three-four excellent starters, but they have a higher payroll and are willing to use it.

It will be really interesting to see what happens whenever the Phone Booth is finally paid off, and that money can be used elsewhere.

Agreed but that's 2019, long past the time of this Big 3

It's spring training, so take it for what it is, but Tims velocity is apparently down in the 80s again.

Dude has done a lot for this franchise, but we need to be realistic. Between the two, Cain is the "safer" choice.

Not overly concerned about the velocity issue...the kid's all about his throwing motion and getting everything working. If he hits the first regular season game in the high 80's than the concern begins.

Cot's has great info on team and player salary. It moved to baseballprospectus this year.

The main page is : Cot's Baseball Contracts

The Giants' page is : San Francisco Giants | Cot's Baseball Contracts

Giants' salary obligation for 2012 and on-ward is : https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t4r9nky1EouVJsFXQlv3FKQ&output=html

In terms of pitching:
Matt's last year is 2012 (without a new contract that we are all wishing for)
Vogelsong's last year is '13
Zito's last year is 2014 (with a $7M gift in 2015)
Timmy's last year is 2014
Bumgarner's last year is '16

Affeldt's last year is '12
Mota's last year is '12
Wilson's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)
Lopez's last year is '13
Casilla's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)
Hensley's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)
Romo's last year is '16
Runzler's last year is '16
Surkamp's last year is *at least* 2017 (depend. on when he's recalled)

Don't scare me like that! This indicates that 2013 is Zeets' last season, with a buyout in 2014.

No, 2014 is Zito's last season, with a buyout in 2015. For all of the players, "is XXX's last year" means that is the last year they play for the team, becoming a FA at the end of the season.

Well, crap. I noticed an error and now I can't edit the OP.

Romo's last season is 2015, not 2016. Sorry.

And just to throw a big scare into everybody, after the 2013 season this will be what remains of our stellar pitching (barring any new contracts, of course) :

Bumgarner (thru end of 2016)

Romo (thru end of 2015)
Runzler (thru end of 2014)
Surkamp (thru end of 2017 or 18)

{Edited to remove Zito's and Timmy's names.}

I just looked up the contract on another site, and it said that 2013 is the last year of Zeets' contract, with 2014 being a club option or buyout year. He is a Free Agent then in 2015. I R COnfused.

http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/barry-zito/

12/29/06: Signed seven-year, $126.0 million contract w/ 2014 vested option and full NTC.
2009: $18.5 million.
2010: $18.5 million.
2011: $18.5 million.
2012: $19.0 million.
2013: $20.0 million.
2014: $18.0 million club option w/ $7.0 million buyout (vests w/ 200 IP in 2013, 400 IP in 2012-13 or 600 IP in 2011-13) (voidable by player).
2015: Free Agent

No, *I* R confused. I completely misread the spreadsheet and didn't double check. Now that I have, I've found 3 mistakes (Timmy, Romo and Zito).

Zito is a FA after 2013, you are correct.

To balance the karma, 2013 is also Timmy's last year.

At this point, I might as well re-post the (corrected) list :

In terms of pitching:
Matt's last year is 2012 (without a new contract that we are all wishing for)
Zito's last year is 2013 (with a $7M gift in 2014)
Timmy's last year is 2013
Vogelsong's last year is '13 (team option for '14)
Bumgarner's last year is '16

Affeldt's last year is '12
Mota's last year is '12
Wilson's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)
Lopez's last year is '13
Casilla's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)
Hensley's last year is '13 (2013 being arb eligible)

Not really an update, but Baggs was on KNBR this morning and said that they still aren't particularly close to an extension with Cain. He did however say that Cain does in fact (according to baggs) like it here and the Giants do want him signed long term. He also said that Cain is reportedly lo oking for market value and he'll stay.
