I think this year is built for teams with very little turnover on the roster and behind the bench.

i see it more as whomever just stay healthy and gets on the streak at the right time combined with the above.

Presidents trophy and a 2nd round out.

Of course, with the price still going up! this team could look different in a week

Geez, I had forgotten about the Pens getting Vokoun. He's not quite the same Vokoun that he used to be, but should provide extra motivation for Fleury.

With an injury depleted D Corps and a short camp, I don't like the Sens chances this year.

There will likely be two callups (NHL rookies) playing on the Sens blueline. That is not good. It might be good for overall development of some significant talent, like Patrick Wiercioch, but the team will likely struggle out of the gate. It wouldn't surprise me to see them dig a deep hole in the first three weeks. I don't think any team can afford to do that this year.

I expect Jakob Silfverberg to be in the conversation for the Calder trophy and the two rookie blueliners to struggle adapting to the NHL game. I think this team misses the playoffs and picks in the 5-10 range.

I say all this but the wildcard is coach Paul MacLean. He worked wonders last year with a bunch of rooks; perhaps he can do it again this year.

One could only hope. Well except all of you non-Penguin fans.

Every time I think all those guys are over the hill, another old-timer in net does something insane like Roloson.

i don't have very high expectations for the wings this year. Our defense looks atocious on paper right now. i think the wings have great forward depth so i'm not too worried about the offense

however the defense is another story. no lidstrom or stuart back there anymore and not a single legit pk defender. somebody like smith, kindl or ericsson will have to step up this season in order for the wings to have any shot at going deep in the playoffs

When you have a backup that's a borderline starter it's a comforting feeling. Johan Hedberg is a major reason Brodeur had the season he did last year. Knowing that you still have a very real chance of winning when the starter takes a night off, or knowing your season isn't dead in the water if the starter goes down is good to know. The Vokoun signing is an underrated great move by the Pens.

Especially in a short season. A decent/experienced backup for any team will help, all you need is one injury where the starter is out for a couple of weeks.

I think I heard a stat last night that in games Flames backup goalies started, the team went 2-7-5. Anything close to .500 and the Flames are in the playoffs.

All kidding aside, I thought Fleury had one of his best regular seasons to date, last year. He bested his career averages in GAA and save %, as well as as career high 42 wins. His playoff meltdown was ugly, but can also be attributed to the poor play in front of him, too.

I'm not ready to give up on him, nor do I think the Pens are, either.

:dhd:

Yea, I didn't pay attention to him much during the regular season. But that series against Philly was awful.

It was awful. So was the play of the special teams. 3 short handed goals, and something like a dozen power-play goals. He can't shoulder the entire blame.

With a legit backup for the first time since Conklin, plus a short schedule, I expect to see him play well this season.

Seriously i doubt the Pens are giving up on him and to your point no one, I bet even he doesn't remember the regular season after that series.

This might be the best comedy piece ever written:
Penguins' Martin: 'I just need to be better' | TribLIVE -- NO REALLY?!?

BTW...who the heck is Anton Khudobin? I think the Bruins have enough talent in front of them to protect him but I would be worried if anything happened to Rask. In his NHL games his numbers are great, granted the very small sample size.

Khudobin is damn good. I am very content with our duo right now without Thomas.
