Didn't he take less money than he could have gotten elsewhere? The Canucks don't seem to have a problem getting players to do so. Must be nice. If my team wants a free agent they have to overpay.

actually dont the Isles make offers that are severe overpayments and the free agent declines and takes less money elsewhere? :noidea:

It's actually surprisingly easy. I start without all the bias the Pens' fans have toward him, click the reply button, and start typing...

And voila! I've called him overrated. It's very easy. Again, not just talking about last year. He hasn't had a save percentage below .900 in the playoffs the last THREE years. That's pretty bad. His numbers in the playoffs besides the Cup run are VERY mediocre, if not bad. His regular season numbers are not terribly impressive aside from wins, which are the least telling goalie statistic. Like I said though, I hope you guys keep him for years to come.

Fleury also only has 1 legit top 4 defenseman in front off him. The Penguins need to upgrade their blueline in a big way. Letang needs some help.

Pretty much this. Since the Cup run the Pens D has been a patchwork. Well, the year after the Cup wasn't horrible. But losing a guy like Scuderi or Gill (was good as a Penguin...) will hurt. Last year Letang was hurt for a decent amount of time and Orpik and Martin had the worst years of their careers. Meaning that our best pair was basically Niskanen/Engelland. Unfortunately all the D the Pens have in the system will probably get here in time for Fleury to leave.

Shit the bed for most of the season, then look really good down the stretch (when it's too late), or, look really good for a good chunk of the season; then, for the last month of or so, look like they couldn't beat the Flint Generals of old United Hockey League.

I tend to agree with Elo on this. Fleury is good not great. I would put him somewhere between 12-15 in the league.

Funny how that works out. Based on his cap hit, he stands at about the same place (11th). I've yet to talk with a Penguin fan that compares Fleury to the legends at his position. He's average. And based on his current peers, he's paid at the average slot, as well.

My beloved Buffalo Sabres will finish 6th in the Eastern Conference and get knocked out in the second round of the playoffs.

I think they stumble a little out of the gate until Lindy puts the players that were together in the AHL on the same line and they click and go on a 10-2-3 run to get them back in the running.

I've honestly not talked to a Pens fan in the past year (outside of a few girls who think he's gorgeous) who'd rank him in the top 10, much less in the "elite" group.

I'd put him around 15-18. Nobody is saying others are calling him a legend, but the tenor of the conversation now is AWFULLY different than a couple years ago. I remember the thread where the Pens stuffed the box for the all-star game for him and were defending him as a legit all-star.

Exactly!

Outside of Martin, most Penguin fans place Fleury as whipping boy #2! So who exactly overrates this guy?

Fleury is Felix Potvin, volume 2.

Solid mechanically, a little lazy but very consistent. Which is easy to pick apart with video.
