Josina Anderson is reporting we've acquired Eric Wright for a conditional late-round pick.

He's currently on a 1 year, 1.5M contract with no guaranteed money, so he's not exactly a shoe-in to make the team. Our CBs look pretty good right now, despite lacking a "superstar."

Rogers
Brown
Cully
Nnamdi
Easy E

That's a pretty good top 5.

Eric Wright - DB - 49ers

49ers acquired CB Eric Wright from the Buccaneers in exchange for a conditional 2014 late-round pick.

Wright was projected to start opposite Darrelle Revis in Tampa, but it now looks like second-round rookie Johnthan Banks will be given every opportunity to secure the job. Soon-to-be 28-year-old Wright recently took a hefty pay cut from the Bucs, and he's signed for just $1.5 million this season with no guaranteed money. He'll compete with a handful of other corners in San Francisco, though Jason Cole of Yahoo! hears the 49ers want to dump Carlos Rogers.

Carlos Rogers - DB - 49ers

Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole "keeps hearing" the 49ers "don't want to keep" CB Carlos Rogers.

Rogers was considered a potential cap casualty when the offseason began, but many figured he was a "lock" to keep his spot once $1.25 million of his $5.5 million 2013 salary became guaranteed on April 1. Following the acquisition of Eric Wright on Friday, all three of Rogers, Wright, and Nnamdi Asomugha will have to compete to earn their places on the 53-man roster.

I was just going to post something along these lines. I know you aren't a big fan of Cully Bingo, but I think we can agree he won't be cut. Brown won't be cut either.

I can't see Rogers, Nnamdi and Wright all making the roster as none will play ST (Wright might in a pinch). Cox plays ST and so does Brock, and how many snaps does the 5th CB really play on defense anyway? So, who of the 3 above is least likely to make the team?

Financial considerations:
Nnamdi - no guaranteed + 1 year contract = no cap hit if cut
Wright - no guaranteed + 1 year contract = no cap hit if cut
ROgers - guaranteed money + multiple years = cap hit------ however, 8.1M cap figure next year (when extensions and new contracts are due for young, top players like Kaep, Aldon and Crabtree (&Iupati? can't remember).

Thoughts on which corner doesn't make the squad (from anyone, not just Bingo)?

If the Niners don't keep Rogers, I'm going to be upset they didn't sign DRC like I wanted 'em to. And if they cut him, that's just bad cap management because they could've cut him for much less earlier in the offseason.

Speaking of the DBs, if Nnamdi doesn't work out at CB, why not try him at FS? He's not a lock to make the team either.

My guess would be that Brock and Cox will be the guys who don't make the cut.

Wright, who is a San Francisco native, signed a five-year, $37.5 million deal with the Buccaneers last year. He was suspended for four games during the season for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He tested positive for Adderall, he said at the time. His contract recently was renegotiated, and the 49ers are on the hook for $1.5 million this season.

49ers on the hook????

Adderall? continuing our rivalry with Seattle?

No money is guaranteed in that contract. He still has to pass a physical and make the roster.

Low risk, high reward, I LOVE it! He is a very talented young player who just needs to get his head on straight and keep it there. Could be a steal.

yeah, believe it means IF Wright makes the team, his base salary is $1.5M.

looking ahead to possibly cutting Rogers...................someone has to cover those quick, shifty, slot receivers? saving cap on Rogers can be understood, but not if it means dropping off at NB? even if Rogers wasn't great at it, we can't drop off?

I seriously doubt it. No one wants a 30 something, declining CB with an inflated contract.

They need to just cut him and be done with it, I don't see him beating out Wright, Nnamdi and Culliver (Brown I believe is a lock).

Cox can move down into the slot in nickel situations. If Rogers is simply a nickel back then he should be paid like one and take a pay cut. He is being paid like a #1 CB and didn't perform up to his contract last season, not even in the slot.

I believe if the 9ers cut him it will still be a cap hit if he is not traded. He has guaranteed money on the table. Possible that they might shop him around but I don't think that would be soon.
