It's possible he ran out of gas a number of miles away, but if a car was found abandoned on the highway I'd think that word would have dropped. Its also possible he ran out of gas on a surface street, making it more difficult to identify if a car is abandoned.

All we know right now is.
1. He was killed by a truck.
2. We have no clue why he was on the highway.

Why are we still debating that he was in fact hit in the travel lanes by a dump truck? That had been reported, with pics, days ago.
