Dune: Part 1 (2021)

I have read the book but really never got into it all that much...

never saw the original movie either...

but this is getting a lot of attention. I am guessing there will be a trailer or something at Comic Con in San Diego this year

It's got a pretty awesome cast announced so far

I'm cautiously optimistic, but after 2049 had such a lukewarm reception, I dunno what to think about sci-fi audiences.

Book is maybe the most influential sci-fi book of all time, certainly top five.

Problem is that the amount of info to be dropped on an audience in one movie is almost impossible. One of the deepest detailed universes ever created. Should probably be split up into 2 movies.

Oscar Isaac seems a bit young to play the Duke.

Didn't realize the guy who directed the new Blade Runner is directing this. That's a good sign at least. It's certainly going to be hard to be worse than Dune 1984.

A theatrical release Dune is trilogy material, with each film probably being 2.5-3 hours in duration, otherwise it would best be done as a mini-series by HBO, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, AMC, FX, etc.

Syfy Channel did a Dune mini series in 2000... I would like to see a big budget version made by folks who are very competent.

I would have voted for a high dollar series too (like Le Carre's 'Night Manager'), but you can't argue with the director or the cast they've assembled for this movie.

I'm wondering if they ARE going to try and split up the first novel into parts, but it's been about 15 years since I've read it, so my memory is a little fuzzy if there's a way you COULD split book #1 into 3 movies or not.

I was pissed when Peter Jackson did the Hobbit movies, because there just wasn't enough story there to do 3. Should have been two. LOTR there was plenty of story to divide up.

With Dune, I guess if they REALLY go into the world and universe setup in the first, they could end movie #1 with the Death of Leto. But that doesn't give us much of Paul to hook into if that's the ending of movie one.

Warner Brothers is pushing back Dune's release date by a month to Friday, December 18, 2020, giving Dune a Christmas instead of Thanksgiving release.

I gave Lynch's version a go but thought it was long and boring and never got into Dune because of it. From what I've heard his movie wasn't faithful to the source material whereas this iteration will be.

I'll give this film a chance and based on some of the cliff notes I've seen it may be all right.
