My understanding of the opt out is that the player can exercise it on June 1st and the MLB club has 4 days to add him to the 40 man or let him go. My guess is that the Giants told him that he wasn't going to be added so he's walking.

Yeah, played a few more games after the opt out, but absolteuyl hasn't given any reason for SF to give him 25-man spot. Don't see anyone giving him MLB contract, so assume he'll end up with another AAA squad

I think most guys who exercise this clause end up in a situation no better than the one they left. Its probably the possibility of landing in a better situation that pushes them to that decision.
What I wonder is if a club tells the guy right away that he won't be added that he still plays through the 4 days or can leave right away.
