I am going to the Reno Aces game next Tuesday, the 11th. Going with a friend of mine from LA who lives in the valley now. He's an autograph guy. He goes when the gates open. But the first pitch, he's ready to leave. Meeting another friend there who just moved to Incline Village.

PM me and I will give you my cell number if you're interested in going. Tuesday is one of their 2/$22 nights (ticket, hot dog, soda for $11)

I haven't been to an Aces game since last summer, but they put on a good show. I used to know more of the players down there, but they've traded them all away. Your other friend must be living the dream over in Incline, I'm over on the South Shore normally, or up in Eugene. Thanks for the invite! I'll think on it :suds:

Yeah, I meant the AFL. It is actually a lot of fun. They play one or two night games a week, so there is usually only one game per day. Six teams. When Scottsdale plays an evening at Surprise, they then play at Surprise the next day. I really like the Surprise stadium and the surrounding area.

Doesn't really matter where you stay, Phoenix is so spread out, unless you just go to one team's home games, you are going to be driving.

The Cubs new stadium is nice, too. Beats the hell out of Hohokam, which the A's now have. Ugh.

I've wanted to go to the AFL because spring training is just getting too busy, no matter who you see. One of these years, when the Giants send a good group down, I think I'll check it out.

I may have gone to my last Spring Training for a while. It is farther for me to go from Modesto than from Pasadena. The crowds are miserable. The hotel rates are obnoxious. I don't know anyone I can stay with in Phoenix. It used to be for baseball fanatics, and now all the bandwagoners go. They promote it really well, and they make a ton of $$$ during the six weeks or so of games. Scottsdale is hard to find tickets for. And there are some stadiums I refuse to go to: Hohokam and Maryvale (Brewers) are both in residential neighborhoods and the traffic is insane. I like Surprise, Camelback, and the Salt River Fields (Rockies/Snakes). And there is always Lo Lo's Chicken and Waffles to look forward to!

I have been using travel miles to pay for hotels, but I am traveling less now.

I may go this next year, we'll see. But I may not go for a while. Unless my filthy rich Aerospace Engineer son from Denver pays for his dear old man to go!

I go to ST every year, and went to the new Cubs park this year. Very nice. We always get to a game a Maryvale (one of our group is from Milwaukee) and usually a game at Talking Stick and Scottsdale Stadium. The other game is a wild card, and this year it was Sloan Park. Three left to get to: Goodyear, HoHo, and Surprise.

I was reading about Jordan Johnson earlier when I saw he was starting for San Jose, and I thought "who the hell is this guy? A 2014 23rd rounder out of Cal State Northridge"?

Well, it was hard to find anything on him anywhere. His report from tonight though intrigues me:

He throws a 93-95 mph fastball (topped out at 98 once tonight, 96 a few times) with "second stage hop", 87 mph straight changeup, 80 mph slider/slurve, with late downward vertical movement. Was inconsistent with arm slot, but as game progressed, he found the sweet spot. Was still hitting 95 by his last inning.

That is quite an arsenal for a late round pick. I dug up that he had Tommy John surgery before his freshman year, and didn't really pitch much his sophomore year. His junior year was nothing special, and then the Giants drafted him.

With a debut like that, throwing 98 mph, I think I'll keep an eye on ole Jordan.

Nice bounce-back game for Beede.

Of his 4 walks, one was intentional and one came at the tail end of his outing, in the 7th inning. Good stuff!

Anybody heard anything on Tyler Mizenko? The guy is having a pretty good year at Richmond. Doesn't walk to many batters but does give up a good share of hits and doesn't strike out a lot of batters either. His WHIP is currently at 1.234 but has an ERA of 1.52. Not sure how he's done with inherited runners. Hasn't thrown a wild pitch yet this year, which is good for him. Typically, he throws about 4 to 6 per season (except in Augusta in 2013, when only uncorked 2 of them). He is 25, so getting a bit old to be a true prospect. I don't know what are his pitches and how good they are. Curious if he could possibly be a candidate for the bullpen in the next couple of years.

I personally don't know much about him, but the Giants sent him to the Fall League last year, so they must think somewhat highly of him.

Pretty eye-popping numbers for Jake Smith down in San Jose:

47 games, 73.1 IP, 2.33 ERA, 100 Ks, 20 BBs, 0.82 WHIP, .160 BAA.

Throws a 95 MPH fastball, not sure what else. 48th round pick in 2011. He was a former grounds crew member of the Augusta GreenJackets.

Wow. I had completely missed that, and he was not on my radar at all.

Not ready to call him a prospect just yet, but certainly radar-worthy.

I mean, he's been doing this his whole minor league career. As a 48th rounder though, who knows. Next time Joe Ritzo is taking questions, I'm going to have to ask about him.

One triple away from recording the second cycle in River Cats history, Lollis' 3-RBI night was key for Sacramento. He finished his night 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and a home run. Tonight marked Lollis' second 3-RBI game and his fifth multi-RBI game this season.

Blackburn had a rough first inning, walking two consecutive batters and loading the bases. He managed to pitch himself out of the jam, and proceeded to retire nine batters in a row, including four strikeouts. Blackburn finished his evening allowing just two hits while walking four and striking out five in 5.1 innings of shutout baseball. He was replaced by Steven Okert, who picked up where Blackburn left off, striking out two and retiring all five of the batters he faced during his 1.2 shutout innings.
