I didn't understand why Kelvin Marte got stuck back at double A this year. He did decently at Fresno at the end of 2014. Its not like he's any worse than Braulio Lara, Nik Turley, Tommy Hanson or any of the many other starters that went through Sacramento this year.

I was reading about Jordan Johnson earlier when I saw he was starting for San Jose, and I thought "who the hell is this guy? A 2014 23rd rounder out of Cal State Northridge"?

Well, it was hard to find anything on him anywhere. His report from tonight though intrigues me:

He throws a 93-95 mph fastball (topped out at 98 once tonight, 96 a few times) with "second stage hop", 87 mph straight changeup, 80 mph slider/slurve, with late downward vertical movement. Was inconsistent with arm slot, but as game progressed, he found the sweet spot. Was still hitting 95 by his last inning.

That is quite an arsenal for a late round pick. I dug up that he had Tommy John surgery before his freshman year, and didn't really pitch much his sophomore year. His junior year was nothing special, and then the Giants drafted him.

With a debut like that, throwing 98 mph, I think I'll keep an eye on ole Jordan.

Thanks for the write up. However, unless you mean his San Jose debut, this wasn't his debut. That was last year in the AZL - Jordan Johnson Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com

Thanks man!

Even though like 95% never see the majors, it's just a whole element to the sport that you don't see in any of the others (except for hockey I guess but I'm not familiar with their system). I like to keep up with it.

I live in the belly of the beast (LA) and so to get frequent updates on the minors is fantastic. I'm an NFL draft junkie and have really started to sink my teeth into our minor league system over the last 5+ years or so.

Yes I meant San Jose debut. I actually meant to say I was also intrigued because he skipped Augusta. I'm not sure if it was a spot start, or a legit promotion. If it's the latter, then it leads me to believe the Giants think they found something.
Interesting question. The SJ Giants usually carry 13 pitchers on the roster but have had only 12 for the last week or two. With this Johnson up (the Giants seem to have a fondness for Johnson's in the lower levels), that puts them at 13 but with 13 position players. My understanding is that someone has to be removed from the roster. Not sure if he'll go back down or if Brian Case gets sent back to the AZL.

sfgrb- do you go to any minor league games? They are a kick. My son and I, when living in SoCal, went to Lancaster, High Desert, Rancho Cucamunga, Ontario (Inland Empire), and Lake Elsinore.

Since moving to Modesto, I have been to Fresno, Stockton, Modesto, and Sacramento. Still want to go to Visalia and Bakersfield sometime.

Haven't seen any rookie ball, though there are a ton of teams in the NW.

I did go to the AZL last fall for ten days. Totally different from Spring Training. Games are relaxed. Prices are cheap. You can get a pass for about $100 for all the games for up to 4 people per pass. Lots of scouts, family, and autograph seekers.

I wish there were more AA teams in the west. But they are in the east and in Texas mostly.

You are living the dream Stokes. Growing up in the San Joaquin Valley, I feasted on minor league ball. Mainly Visalia and Modesto. Caught some games in Bakersfield, Lancaster, San Jose and Stockton. I was quite the Cal League aficionado as a teen. I timed my love of baseball and living Fresno poorly though. The Giants moved out in 1986 and lost their team (they had a co-op for year that moved to Salinas, don't see those anymore) in 1987. The Grizzlies didn't start playing until I moved south for college. Still caught some games occasionally. Since being down here, I've gone to some games in Rancho Cucamonga and Lake Elsinore.

We'll have to see in the next couple days I guess. That could really tell a lot.

Last Friday, San Jose sent Skyler Stromsmoe to Sacramento. Also Jake Dunning went from Sacramento to the AZL for rehab, and he is now with San Jose.

Yeah, I saw those moves but the roster is still at 26. I think that the Giants activated Ryder Jones when Stromsmoe got sent back up.

I wish I could go to more. I've been to a few Reno Aces games, and those have always been great. Only been to a San Jose game once.

Back when I was in college at Oregon, I would go to the Eugene Emeralds and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes games all the time because I would stay all summer. Those were always a blast. I was hoping to get up to Salem this year because that team is pretty exciting right now.

It's my goal to go to the AZFL one of these years. I don't have much interest in AZL because it's too hot in the summer.

I am going to the Reno Aces game next Tuesday, the 11th. Going with a friend of mine from LA who lives in the valley now. He's an autograph guy. He goes when the gates open. But the first pitch, he's ready to leave. Meeting another friend there who just moved to Incline Village.

PM me and I will give you my cell number if you're interested in going. Tuesday is one of their 2/$22 nights (ticket, hot dog, soda for $11)

Yeah, I meant the AFL. It is actually a lot of fun. They play one or two night games a week, so there is usually only one game per day. Six teams. When Scottsdale plays an evening at Surprise, they then play at Surprise the next day. I really like the Surprise stadium and the surrounding area.

Doesn't really matter where you stay, Phoenix is so spread out, unless you just go to one team's home games, you are going to be driving.

The Cubs new stadium is nice, too. Beats the hell out of Hohokam, which the A's now have. Ugh.
