From the first article in moog's post...

"Once we made clear that ... we had to get our union leadership, that we've hired for this, in the room, there was just a very big change," Hainsey said on Thursday, after talks broke down. "It was alarming, and I was told that if we were going to do that, it was possibly a dealbreaker. That was made clear last night. It was confusing, because we kind of agreed that we were moving toward each other, and we weren't that far apart. So, it's confusing for the players to think that we were supposed to finish this ourselves."

Hainsey was then asked to confirm, point blank, what he had just said: The owners told you that bringing Don Fehr into the room would be a dealbreaker for the progress you had achieved?

"That's correct," Hainsey said.

I'm not sure who or what to believe anymore, but if the above is true, it's pretty amazing how much Fehr has gotten to not only Bettman, but some of the owners as well.

absolutely incredible. so now it's about making sure Fehr doesn't win. it has nothing to do with the owners winning, just as long as Fehr loses.

what a bloody joke.

ive been saying all along this is about ego and winning not negotiating. this has moved away from the game and the actual business. did Jacobs ever own a MLB team?

oh i agreed w/ you its all about ego.. but it's at least a little understanding if you're fighting to win for yourself.. if you're fighting so that 'he' doesn't win.. that's just ridiculous.. at this point i honestly think the owners would ratify the exact same CBA as last time, but with a 5 year contract limit.. as long as fehr wasn't involved.. they no longer care about winning.. as long as fehr loses they'll be happy

and no front ended deals.

I agree 100%

I Also believe that what the owners are offering right now is what it should be

10 year CBA - fuck the fans DO NOT WANT THIS AGAIN ANYTIME SOON
5 year contract length (7 years for home team)

what is wrong with this? NOTHING.... fuck egos

Owners keep acting like petulant child. "That's the hill we die on" ?? Give me a break.

Jeremy Jacobs (one of the most hawkish owners) approves of his GM signing Seguin to a 6 year, 34.5 million dollar contract a mere three days before the lockout. Why a six year deal? Why not a five year deal to fall in line with the "hill will we die on" mantra?

Is it any surprise non-NHL fans point at the NHL and laugh?

these are the things that just drive me crazy. the NHL could come out and say. look we gave our GMs full autonomy they did it not us we cant hold them back for things we trust them but now we dont like that so we still want them to do what is right in the CBA but we want to limit that.

that is the only defense I can think of for that

I think Fehr has some damage control work to do with the players - Just a hunch, but I think he's told the players that they can still get a better deal from the league. Maybe he's right, but with the sides as reportedly close as they are, that's a big gamble.

Probably wouldn't have worked. Wouldn't have convinced me at least, because I imagine there's very few of the owners of the teams handing out these crazy contracts that don't get notified ahead of time so that they can veto it if need be.

Jacobs for instance. I would have a VERY hard time believing that he didn't give his blessing on contracts like Seguin and Lucic.

After having watched Fehr's and Bettman's press conferences, I have to admit that I think the PA really blew this most recent opportunity to get a deal done.

In Gary's presser he brought up 3 major points within the structure of a new CBA that the clubs' felt they had to have:

- Term Limits of Player contracts 5yrs max, or 7yrs if with current team

- Term of new CBA, first pitched 10 yrs/8yr opt out, then shrunk to 8/6yr op out

- Compliance Issues: 1. reduce cap to 60mil teams could stay @ 70mil for 1 yr
2.Contract Buyouts 3. Escrow Limits

I just don't understand what Fehr is telling the PA they can still squeeze out of the league? :nonod:

With this most recent train-wreck, Daly and Buttman made it sound like the concept of 'make whole' is now completely off the table because it was based around a concept of an 82 game schedule. Now that the league has no hope of even a 60 game schedule, I don't really see how the PA will be able to get the league to put the 300 million, or really any dollar amount related to 'make whole', back on the table.

a big gamble for nothing essentially.. what can they possibly gain still? a shorter CBA that hurts them in the long run anyway? a couple more years for the contracts for the elite (since those are the only ones that get that long of a contract anyway)? a 10% variation so they can go from 5 mil, down to 3ish over the course of a 5 year contract?

honestly, what is there still to gain for the players? it makes absolutely no sense for them to not be satisfied. the players are fuckin retarded for trusting fehr. anything else they 'gain' in this negotiation is just fluff for fehr to say he got them

Meh, Fehr is a part of the problem. Not single handed.

And, taking the last few months of this predicament as a whole, I don't disagree with that one bit. The author made his level of impartiality known by called Fehr "Dark Lord Sith (or whatever)", but as far as this particular recent moment in time goes, I agree with him that Fehr should bear the lion's share of the blame.
