'Tis but a scratch...
I know every team goes through injuries every season and injury should be no excuse but it has been and extraordinary injury parade for the Tigers this season. Certainly part of the blame can be put on the crappy bench and depletion of the minor league system. Long periods of time without JD and Mabin and Nick C and Zimmermann is a lot to overcome.
Zimmermann's loss and his inability to pitch well when he tried to return hurt the worst, IMO. Too many games starting Sanchez and a revolving door of bums, especially before Norris was fully healthy and before Boyd hit his stride. Many of those games were doomed from the get-go.
That said, you hit on the big reason the injuries hurt the Tigers so much ... crappy bench and lack of organizational depth.
Also, none of the injuries you mentioned were relief pitchers. A mostly healthy relief corps nonetheless was trash for most of the season. The closer was decent and our 6th-7th inning guy, Alex Wilson, was mostly reliable. Kyle Ryan was okay in long relief. That's about it. When your primary setup guys, Justin Wilson and Shane Greene, have ERAs of 4.21 and 5.55 respectively, you're doomed. Add in an expected setup guy, Mark Lowe, being completely useless, and its hard to hold leads or keep close games close.
