DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers will face three young pitchers in their critical three-game series against the Atlanta Braves this weekend.

Julio Teheran, the 25-year-old staff ace, will pitch for the Braves on Sunday. Two 24-year-olds -- Matt Wisler (7-12, 4.86 ERA) and Aaron Blair (1-7, 8.02) -- will take the mound in the first two games at Turner Field.

The Tigers will counter with Daniel Norris (3-2, 3.59) on Friday night and Jordan Zimmermann (9-6, 4.88) on Saturday. Tigers ace Justin Verlander (16-8, 3.10) will face Teheran (6-10, 3.33) on Sunday.

Norris was originally slated to start on Thursday against the Cleveland Indians. That game was rained out and will be replayed on Monday afternoon in Detroit only if it impacts the postseason race.

There's a good chance that it could. In that case, Michael Fulmer would probably start on Monday. If the Tigers qualified for the wild card game on Tuesday, Matt Boyd, Anibal Sanchez or Buck Farmer would be the most likely options to start.

Even that scenario doesn't take into account the possibility of a tiebreaker game between Monday's makeup day and the start of the playoffs.

The Tigers enter the final weekend 1 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles for the final wild card spot.

If the Tigers finish 4-0, they would qualify for a tiebreaker game if Toronto or Baltimore loses at least one of their final three games.

Toronto finishes its season at Boston, while the Orioles play at New York. Rainy weather could play havoc with both of those series as well, which would add another complication to the playoff picture.

One bit of good news: It's expected to be sunny, warm and -- most importantly -- dry in Atlanta this weekend. The Braves, who are moving into a new stadium in the northern suburbs next year, are playing the final series at Turner Field.

Will be interesting to see how the Tigers respond with their backs literally up against the wall. A sweep, I would hope, gets them a makeup game with Cleveland. Lose one game of the three....and they need outside help, in the form of Toronto or Baltimore losing 2 out of three in their respective series.

Pretty much - win or go home each game.

It's weird that the Tigers season could hang on a Jordan Zimmerman start.
