He messed up by letting them all face one or 2 batters before pulling them....veras shouldnt had been pulled after one hit. That started the mudslide......well taking max out did.

That's a great point.. I agree 100%

Walking JE was a major letdown from Smyly. The guy had done zilch and Drew couldn't throw strikes. Scary thing, Phil will get a look from the skipper soon now.

Drew has been struggling for almost 2 months now. He was a trustworthy set-up guy for most of the season, but not down the stretch.

Yep. When Smyly came in to face Ellsbury, my first thought was that he would face the two righties that follow also because certainly they would want their only decent lefty RP to pitch to one of the most dangerous lefty hitters in the game in that situation and setting. Silly me; what the heck was I thinking?

I think everybody in the universe thought that except leyland. I was shocked when they went to smyly...all i was worrying about at the beginning of the 8th was make sure the bases werent loaded whenever papi got his last AB....and if so, use smyly to face him.

It's a thought, and knowing how much Leyland loves "the numbers" I'm surprised he didn't roll with that one. But, despite the numbers, I wouldn't trust Coke. I don't trust him at all, and hope he is no longer a Tiger next year. I'd rather have Benoit face Ortiz.

Yeah but chances are, IF coke faced papi, he prolly walks him.....then u bring benoit in to get the rightie, then MAYBE benoit couldve pitched the 9th.

Also im in favor of not letting benoit come in for a 4 out save if it will prevent him from pitching the 9th. It was still tied.....but lets bring in porcello....

I agree. He clearly was tiring down the stretch. His fastball was WAAAY down in velocity. Seemed to have recovered some speed against the As. (Back up in the low 90s). But he could throw strikes tonight. I didn't really pay attention to his pitch speed tbh. Did you notice if it was back down?

I understand that, but he is our lefty we rolled with.....he needs to be saved for the other teams best left handed hitters. Not in a 5-1 game where he cant stay in to face the big lefty.

Oh, I completely agree. It's not like we have a lot of great options in our pen.

I wonder if Veras, Smyly, AlAl, and Benoit think it was Leyland's fault the Tigers lost the game? Do you think Jackson and Hunter are sitting at their barstool, blaming JL for the loss?

lol can you imgine.
Veras "Leyland knows I suck why did he bring me in"
AlAl "IM hot and im cold im up and im down im here and im there"
Benoit "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkk"

:laugh3:
but we know that Leyland blew it when he brought the blow pen in and to be blunt it doesn't matter what they think.
The more see hunter overrun the ball and not catch the HR that was there the more I think of how he use to be a good outfielder.
but lets be honest Max had this and Leyland blew it. :burt::gaah::doh:

I want to thank Iggy for making such a stupid rookie play and mostly I want to thank Catfish Hunter for Free Agency that has brought us high salaries pitch counts and 7 man bullpens to protect starters arms instead of starters finishing games.

i would love to hear what max has to say. spent after 108 pitches and 1 minor jam?

He's keeping to the party line. I think he just has Leyland's back. I don't believe for a second that he went in the dugout after that 7tgh inning and said "I'm done skip". He was pumped.

Hunter isn't what he used to be but he that was a great effort just to get anywhere near that ball. That wasn't some lazy bomb that he had a chance to time. That was a rocket.

I'd mostly blame the shit BP. What kind of moron uses a 1st pitch fastball to a fastball hitter struggling with breaking balls all night? Benoit that is...

Lions=TehSucks has it right. This is on the futile relievers moreso than Leyland. The announcers said Ortiz hadn't done much off Benoit in his career, so the move made sense. It wasn't Leyland who threw the crap fastball right over the plate to a guy sitting dead-red. And if Avila called for a first-pitch fastball, shame on him, too. And it wasn't Leyland who came out of the pen and immediately walked a left-handed batter, that was Drew Smyly.

The relievers "pitched scared", and therein lies the problem. You folks know I trash Leyland enough, so this isn't an Iffy-esque defend-Leyland-at-all-costs post. He put relievers in where they could succeed, based on the matchups, and they failed. The only thing I really questioned was not giving Max a chance in the 8th. But who knows, Max might have told Leyland he was gassed.

You need to thank Fielder for letting it get by him. He should have gotten his fat ass in front of the ball and blocked it at least.

I am sure Jim Leyland wishes he had done things differently, but I think a lot of managers would have done the same thing in the 8th inning. IMHO, the problem was not Leyland, but inferior arms. You have to think that one of those pitchers, used after Scherzer, would have stepped up and performed. As someone said, they pitched "timid"....they did not want (or couldn't) take charge. Must be tough on those relief pitchers this morning...their manager showed confidence in them and they let the team down. But....let's not forget that guys like Hunter, Jackson, and Iglesius also did not hold up their end. Plenty of blame to go around.
