It would be better to give Cousins a defense instead of wishing you had the Jets QBs.

I didn't wish we had the Jets QBs, I just wish we hadn't wasted 5 years hoping Cousins could carry us to the top.

And I am assuming Winston will be cut after June 1st.

Correct me if I am wrong but right now his dead money is a lot higher prior to that date?

It's a marginal decision. The Saints have to account for $2.8M of dead money relating to Winston in 2023 regardless of what they do. There's $8.4M in dead money that they're scheduled to account for in 2024. If they cut him before June 1 they'll remove Winston's $12.8M salary from the 2023 cap but the $8.4M will have to be accounted for in 2023 rather than 2024. That would give them $4.4M more cap space in the free agency period before June 1. Alternatively they could designate Winston as a post June 1 cut which would mean they had to keep the $12.8M salary on the books until June 1, (hurting their cap space in the free agency period). However after June 1 they wouldn't have to account for either the $12.8M or the $8.4M dead money in 2023. This would give them more 2023 cap space to sign their Draft class and make in-season moves. They'd still have to account for the dead money in 2024. My guess is that they designate him as a post June 1 cut to help with the 2023 season, but it's marginal.

Thanks for the explanation! :suds:
