"Swinney’s contract also includes a buyout enhancement if he leaves to become the head coach at Alabama. His buyout is $4 million through Dec. 31, 2020; $3 million in 2021-2022; $2 million in 2023-2025; and $1 million in 2026-2027.

If Swinney leaves for Alabama, the buyout jumps to $6 million through Dec. 31, 2020; $4.5 million in 2021-2022; $3 million in 2023-2025; and $1.5 million in 2026-2027."

Contract - Average 9.3mm a year for 10 years ($93mm total)

Personally, I think this is crazy because he would be nuts to leave Clemson where he literally will have the stadium named after him and be the most popular person in the state of South Carolina to go to Alabama and follow Saban plus live in the shadow of Bear. That is some heavy shit man.

I don't think Dabo is worth this and I'll explain why:

1. Saban is worth the money because Alabama is aggressively expanding it's enrollment and want to grow to about 60K and his 9.4mm a year is driving up applications and quality of applications like crazy. Massive return on investment and worth every cent.

2. Clemson is in a category of selective school with an enrollment of 19K and not really looking to aggressively expand that enrollment. Granted Dabo is driving donations up and that is the counter argument but the fact is there is a limit to how much he can do that with a reduced base.

3. The ACC payouts are less:
Alabama - 43mm
Clemson - 30mm

So Dabo is going to take about 1/3 of all the money the ACC pays to the individual member teams and that doesn't include his assistants (Venables makes 2mm alone). I think you could have shaved a million, cut the contract to 5 years and he wasn't going to leave. AD's are idiots.

Skimmed what you wrote, but I will say I think that is a smart move by Clemson.

With that being said, a buyout clause is pretty much pointless. If a big program thinks they found their guy, paying an extra 3 million is well worth it in the attention, money the coach will generate.

It helps to cover the buyout clause of the next coach they get.

All contracts have a morality and with cause clauses so they can fire people and not be on the hook for the remainder of the contract.

Dabo probably wouldn’t leave, but Alabama can raise $6M as quickly as $4M for the buyout. Money will not be an issue.

With Sabans new Hip, he's got 10 more years in him easy.

Next thing is, with Dabo before, he was coaching up 3-4 stars mainly. Now he's getting 5 stars with bigger ego's and attitudes. Lets see how he does juggling more of those over the next few years. He is a great coach, but coaching up egotistical 5 stars isnt the same as coaching up players hungry to play.

The value Dabo brings
1: Donations - The amount raise before vs now exceeds the 9.3 mil he will be making.

Clemson fundraising tops $156 million, creates 88 new scholarships and fellowships, Cornerstone Partners for Academics

2: Local Economy
3: National Branding
4: Doubling the number of applications

In 2008, 15,542 students applied for freshman admission to Clemson. In 2018, 28,844 students applied, an 86 percent increase.

Getting in: As applicant pool grows, Clemson becomes more competitive

1. 7th consecutive year so that trend was happening before you got successful.

2. Applications can double but you aren't adding additional students so it doesn't move the revenue needle. Auburn is in the same boat. Saban brings value because they are accepting a crap load of kids and expanding the enrollment.

3. Clemson is already a great school and is selective to the number of students it takes so there just isn't the branding bump you think your getting academically.

I'm very familiar as Clemson was my daughter's second choice and we did tons of research and visited twice. She ended up at Loyola of Chicago but it was tough choice for her.

Not disagreeing with anything else necessarily but #2. While the total number of students hasn’t doubled with the applications, the total number of students is increasing. Clemson has steadily been accepting more and more over the years. And it’s very noticeable the impact on the town over the last 4 years. The number of new apartments is crazy. The campus and the town are completely different from my freshman year in 2013.

The same is true at Auburn but what you have to understand is that Alabama has doubled in size the last 20 years is currently around 50k with the goal to go to 60K.

In comparison Auburn has gone from 25k to around 30K and Clemson's total enrollment has gone from 19k to 24k. Both Auburn and Clemson have maintained standards where a monkey could get in Alabama.

It's just a totally different philosophy. That is where Saban's true value is because he helps drive those numbers up and feed the beast.
