This is why I can't get excited about this late life. Even if we make it, this roster can't do squat in the playoffs.
It is unbelievable how many players are getting hurt in the past month and a half. Just to recap, here are the guys NOT available to play:
Tim Lincecum
Hector Sanchez
Andrew Susac
Ehire Adrianza
Brandon Belt
Joe Panik
Nori Aoki
Gregor Blanco
Hunter Pence
Juan Perez

Add to that guys who were sidelined at some point in the past two months (Affeldt, Cain, Hudson, Leake, Crawford, Pagan) and maybe its time to start a "fire the training staff" campaign.

So that means, among the active roster, only the following are available:
Catcher
Trevor Brown
Jackson Williams

Infield
Brandon Crawford
Matt Duffy
Kevin Frandsen
Nick Noonan
Buster Posey
Kelby Tomlinson

Outfield
Marlon Byrd
Alejandro DeAza
Angel Pagan
Jarrett Parker
Mac Williamson

In terms of numbers, that looks more like an April through August roster than a September roster. Man, has the injury bug bit hard this month.

Someone tell Bochy, who used 10 pitchers in a 9 inning game on Wednesday.

Hey, he's got the starting rotation to pinch hit at any time as well, so his bench is deep!
The Giants have 9 HRs from their pitchers this year.

Most teams would be thrilled to get that from their SS or 2B positions...

Thus, my post, made tongue in cheek.
Giants' starting rotation, #weaklink, except in the lineup.
I understood what you were saying, just adding to it. It is hard to believe what our pitchers have done this year with the bats.

Up the middle, the Giants have gotten (approximations)...

C - 19 (Posey has hit a few from 1B, but Sanchez and Susac have hit their combined 4 from the catcher position)
2B - 9
SS - 20
CF- 6 (Pagan with 3, and I think Banco has hit most of his 5 from CF)
P - 9

That is about 63 HRs from up the middle. That might be tops in the majors.

Understood. One oddity about this team this year. Mediocre starting rotation, except with the bats. Baseball is such a weird sport.

cal, Bochy, Williams and Noonan have all been outrighted off the 40 man roster. A little disappointed about Bochy. Feel he's getting the raw deal because he's the manager's son.

Thanks. Updated.

That means that Brown and JCP made the first cut. Not surprised by Brown after how he played, but I am slightly surprised by Perez. I like Perez, I just am not certain he is anywhere near the roster next year. This team is deep as eff in the OF right now, and JCP does not have any options left.

I smell a trade chip.

I think they bring Perez in to spring training for insurance in case they need an extra outfielder due to injuries. If there is no room for him, I think he likely gets dfa'd. Not sure he's going to get traded anywhere.

Possibly. and just because he was not DFA'd on day 1 does not mean he will not be DFA'd in the coming days/weeks.

The Giants are just in a bit of a 40-man crunch and JCP has about a 5% chance of being with the org (on the 40-man) come week 2 in April.

It looks like, with the three they outrighted, and the two retiring (Affeldt and Hudson, who would be free agents anyway) they have exactly 40 players when they activate the guys off the 60 day dl. I count 8 free agents, which would put the roster at 32 once they declare. That gives them flexibility to bring up a few pitchers to the 40 man roster before deciding who else needs to be outrighted/traded. That would happen on a case by case basis once they start signing free agents.

They have room right now. That is not the question. I have the roster broken down in the first post of this thread.

Like I said, though, I am not "OMG!!!" shocked he was not DFA'd. Just "hmmm." interested that he wasnt DFA'd. There is still a LOT of off-season for moves to solidify.

I believe that Nov 20th is the deadline to add your own minor league players to the 40-man - after that date only new acquisitions can be added. So we are getting close to the date! (Not sure if this is the best thread for this or not - there were 3 where 'the 40-man' took up a lot of posts.)
