1. You have nothing to base that judgment on.
2. You completely ignore his history at SS.
3. Jeff Kent.

You put way too much stock in the fact that as an 18 or 19 year old he was able to play SS at the college level and completely ignore the change in the lower half of his body that he has gone through since then.

He would be pretty rough to watch at 2B.

Why not play Morse as SS?

No?

You are completely ignoring his history at SS.

When Kent and Durham were with the Gs, they were consistently the worst (defensive) 2B in the NL (going on # of errors).

How many rings did the Giants win all those years with Kent and Durham? Oh, yeah - none.

So let me get this right:

1. Kent and Durham made a lot of errors (unverified, but let's go with it);
2. Kent and Durham played for the Giants;
3. While with the Giants, no championships were won.

Conclusion: Kent and Durham were the reason the Giants didn't win championships.

By this reasoning, Barry Bonds was also culpable for no rings.

As the kids say: #fail

No, I'm not. Morse played SS for a year in 2005 and had a -1.2 dWAR.

From this conversation, one can only conclude you all enjoy mediocrity.

It's not a good idea for Posey to play second, but this isnt the reason why not.

I think probably we sign Panda and in maybe 1-2 years start moving Belt to LF. Yes he's a plus defender at first but it's more important to have a plus defender at catcher. He may not like it but that's baseball.

Also, it doesnt have to happen all at once. Posey can play 120 games at C, then 80, then 20...you have flexibility, some days Belt sits vs a lefty, some days Posey sits vs a righty, etc.

Of course they may not sign Panda then who knows...

Why does putting a guy at second that likely can't handle the position mean you don't enjoy mediocrity?

Flexibility will be important. Assuming Pablo resigns, he may be required to move to 1B later on depending on his weight issues and length of contract. It would be nice to slowly allow Posey to adjust to both corner infield positions.

Kent was still a positive dWAR defender in his years with the Giants.

That we didn't win in 2002 had nothing to do with his defense. The rings were practically on our fingers until the bullpen broke down in game six. He was positive 0.6 dWAR that year. Anyone who remembers Kent as a lousy defender as a Giant has dementia

Foot speed has nothing, nothing, nothing to do with one's ability to play acceptable defense at second base.

Still, it does not follow that because Kent was decent there that next year/2 years from now Posey would be.

I suspect Posey, Bochy, and the rest of them probably know best.

I don't know how this is any less scary a thought than trying Posey at second base.

Because LF is where teams have always hid there good hitting/bad fielding guys, after 1B (see Morse, Michael). It's a position that doesn't take as much skill as 3B/SS/2B and isn't as critical. And Belt is a decent athlete who would probably play it ok. I suspect Posey is not suited to 2B. If I'm wrong I'm sure Bochy will figure that out.

Sorry. The intransigence here is making Angry MF come out.

Look that up in your F### and Wagnall's.

Our second basemen collectively have a .546 OPS this year. I didn't look, but i would bet a nickel that is the worst 2B OPS in the majors this year, if not the worst collective of any position in the majors, outside of pitcher.

OK, I lost my nickel, but just barely. SD 2B have a .542 OPS. TB catchers have a .534 OPS. But that's it.

It goes to show what an upgrade Castillo would be if we could sign him and convince him to play 2B for at least the rest of the year. If he could hit at a .750 OPS, that would upgrade our average starters by .025. That would be huge.
