So:

Forwards
Horton
JVR
Kadri
Nylander
Komarov
Bozak
Lindberg??

Defense
Rielly
Gardiner
???

Goalie
???

Looking at that I don't see the Horton inclusion hurting you guys at all. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Oh I'm pretty sure the Leafs are fine.

It's just funny to me that the one guy on the team with a NMC is Horton lol.

And I think if anyone else, Corrado and/or Marincin would be protected. Team is high on both.

Calgary has room for Fleury! Hooray!

I wonder what his NMC looks like? Could he be a d-bag and refuse any trade, forcing Pittsburgh to expose Murray and thereby stealing back his rightful role as starter?!?!

The Pens are in no hurry to trade Fleury, but then they might have to expose Murray which could make other teams scurry to clear roster space to have one less worry.

I'm a casual hockey fan, admittedly, but wouldn't this just mean Pitt might just do some extra work to trade him rather than lose him for nothing in the Expansion Draft?

Yup, and they're not the only team with two pretty good goalies either, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, and St. Louis have some tough decisions to make as well.

I don't think they should be either. Murray is having an amazing post-season, but to automatically assume he's ready for the full-time starter role based on this run would be a huge mistake.

True, but we're talking about MAF here not Carey Price.
Agreed. But if nothing else (which, really there isn't much else), MAF has always been a good enough regular season goalie to get them in the POs. You need time to ensure that Murray is at least that.

At this juncture, I think they'll take their chances. At worst you gotta find another Fleury. Not that difficult if teams start moving goalies left and right because of the expansion draft threat.

I would assume any terms would at least give them until the trade deadline to make a decision. The mistake I would see is trying to move MAF this off-season.

He has more value in July than he does in February, especially if he rides pine until then because MM continues his excellent play.

They can probably convince a team to give them a first rounder for MAF this month (maybe even get their own 1st rounder back from T.O). Doubt they get that kinda deal at the deadline if he's started no more than 20 games.

I don't think they get a first rounder for him, even in July.

But who knows. Most of this becomes pointless to discuss anyhow if the Canes relocate instead of expansion.

If it weren't for expansion, I would definitely say keep Fleury until we see how Murray pans out. But if expansion comes and you can only protect one G, Fleury should go when his value is highest.

I could see them starting the season with him as starter (or splitting time with Murray) to build up some value. But if you can only keep one, you keep Murray, and take the risk. Much easier to find another Fleury than Murray.

I think they can, and if not they could always eat a mil of his salary to sweeten it. A team without a goalie (Calgary especially, but you could toss a team like Dallas into the mix there as well, or NYI, or AZ) that would be a contender with a solid goaler will pay for one. Teams like that are buying at least 10 wins a year just by acquiring a better-than-replacement level goalie. Dallas is obviously more playoff-concerned (and MAF's playoff woes are well-doc'd) but for a team like the Flames that would vault them somewhere between the first wild card and a division seed. Pretty easy argument for Rutherford to make.

It's worth noting that Peter Karmanos is on the executive committee of the NHL that met regarding expansion. If the Canes are indeed moving that could've been what the entire discussion was about yesterday.

Murray seems to have a level of focus and mental toughness that you can't teach.

His vulnerability to sharp angle shots can be fixed. Murray should pan out just fine. I can't imagine Fleury not being the first player selected in an expansion draft. He's a quality goalie who still has many good to decent years left in him.

That said, I wouldn't trade any goalie in my system for him except maybe McIlhiney.

No way on Earth he can go to Dallas without them first unloading one or both of their existing contracts, which is no easy feat.

The only one of those other teams I could see considering a 1st straight up is NYI. You're looking at #6 and #7 overall for Calgary and Arizona, respectively. I don't see either of those GMs being willing to give up that high of a pick in a one-for-one deal.

I could see something like Fleury and the 30th pick (sorry Sharks fans, I don't see a comeback happening) for 6/7 and a 3rd, but I don't think salary retention alone does it.
