They never should have called it a "one-week injury." As Pix said, concussions don't have time lines. The best way to deal with them is rest. I would speculate, as others here have, that during those light workouts, he had a setback (perhaps a headache or some dizziness) and the team and Crosby agreed that the best environment for recovery was his home, surrounded by his family. Personally, I think it's a good idea, getting him away from stress and work.

Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby (concussion) expected to miss one week - ESPN I can find more but you get the point.

If there is a set back then say it. It is not a secret anymore that he has a concussion. Why not say whats going on.

They worded it that way because the NHL's policy is that no matter what when you rule it a concussion they must be out at least a week. Very shortly after that they said there was no timeline for return, and that straight from the Pens.

Not getting on my high horse, but I'm being educated currently to become an AT, with a future in becoming PA, etc. blah blah blah...but, with this knowledge I can say that I know a great amount about concussions. There's no such thing as a minor concussion. You can't grade them. I say this because everyone reacts to concussions/hits to the head differently. One guy may get concussed and be fine after a few days of rest, but the next guy who got the same force to the head will be out multiple weeks and could develop "post concussion syndrome" where the symptoms relapse and basically you're miserable, yet another guy could take the same hit and not be concussed at all. It varies. But rest assured that Sid's not some pussy who's afraid to play all the sudden. And yes, there are books that say you can grade concussions, but it's a bunch of crap, because it's the reaction the person has after the hit/contact that really matters. You're speaking out of frustration.

If he is having setbacks then why not say that. He is one of the best players in the NHL and I think the Pens owe it to the fans and the NHL in general to be up front with the injury status

They have been. They said there was a setback a couple weeks ago, and that's why they weren't going to have a time line on his return. At that point, they said they wouldn't be updating anymore on his progress because there was no time line for his return.

I really think they don't feel it's appropriate to update further because they can't give an actual timeline, and it's not worth while to give one, because on any given day he could take another turn backwards (upside? getting some great cap space right now). I agree they're being quiet about it, and that sucks, but with the way the league has handled injuries all season, you can't be surprised.

If he is taking a vacation when he is cleared for light workout then it is probably time for another update.

I see your beef with that particular situation, but you shouldn't have called his leadership/ability/grit into question because of it...he's pretty much proven himself to me at this point.

I just dont see how a "leader" takes a vacation in the middle of a playoff race. Anyone else in the Burgh would be crucified for this. I just dont get the free pass without any explanation.

I really don't think this is a vacation. I think it's a more of a recovery move. It's easier to rest when you're at home and not at work.

If I were a Pens fan, I would be more concerned with Crosby's complete recovery. As of now the Pens are winning and are in a comfortable position in the standings. There is really no reason to rush things.

Besides, do you want Crosby to become the next Eric Lindros?

I would be more than happy to have a healthy and motivated Crosby back just in time for the playoffs.

All I am saying is this is the longest I have ever seen an athlete out of the lineup with a minor concussion. I only say minor because he didnt lose conciousness. Now this far in to his absence when he is allowed to start training he is headed on vacation. Defend him all you want and try to create a decent reason for it, this is some bullshit

LOL... This is ridiculous. There is nothing he can do in Pittsburgh that he can't do at his parents place. Why would a guy who can't work out sit around and watch his fellow players work out? That would somehow help team morale? No. Best to let him leave the team and have them get down to business trying to win games without their best player.

Oh and... Nova Scotia is awesome but for someone making near 9 million bucks a year, I hardly think that Cole Harbour is where they'd choose to take their vacation in early February.

My sources tell me that he is not improving much at all. After seeing a few specialists, it was determined that this was a more serious injury than first thought. Crosby is taking an unspecified amount of time away from the game to discuss with his family his future in the NHL.

My source, by the way, is a boy named Tony that lives in my mouth.

I'm with the OP.

Crosby has shown time and time again he doesn't give a shit about hockey, or his team, all he wants to do is relax and coast through the season. If he had half a set of balls, he would charge back into the lineup after a dangerous concussion injury and help drag his floundering, basement dwelling (winners of four straight and 7-3 in their last 10? Talk about tanking for Nugent-Hopkins) team out of the depths of fourth place in the East.

If it turns out he rushed back and he gets another concussion, no biggie. He can just keep playing, unless he's NOT MAN ENOUGH.

Personally I would just waive his floating, heartless, gutless ass and draft a new center.

I assume these discussions go something like this:

Dad Crosby: What do you think about your future in the NHL?
Son Crosby: A few more Stanley Cups.
Mom Crosby: How many Pork Chops?
Son Crosby: 2.
Dad Crosby: Pass the mash potatoes.

It's a boring house hold.

SO I am the only one here that thinks if the Captain is going to take a break to head home after being cleared for some activity that some questions should be asked/answered. I am sure the consensus was this injury was coming to an end and now this.

If it was Wellwood, Malkin, Kovalev, or some other lazy bitch I would be asking questions. But it's Crosby. I don't like him, I almost hate him, but he's one of the hardest working, grittiest team players in the league. All the players respect him as a captain and a leader. He gets the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, i think you are.
Don't you think the main thing is that when he comes back he's absolutely 100%, and rested and ready for a playoff run?
A trip home after nothing but doctors could be just the thing to get him rejuvenated and refocused.
