My dad eats soup all the time too, I don't get it. It's not a "he's 80+ without all of his teeth" thing either, he's always been a big soup fan. Personally if I'm ordering/eating soup it's probably a "this restaurant X serves the best Y soup and you have to try it!" situation.
I also didn't think of this until just now but it reminds me of Claudia and Elizabeth introducing Russian culture to Paige. I feel like they were always making some kind of soup in those scenes.
