The real question is how did they not claim a single player? I look just at the list of guys the Leafs cut and think that most of them look better than every single winger Edmonton has.

They cut Gagner. I know he has lost a bit but there is no way he couldn't have been used before some of those twits.

What they "should" do is:

During the opening ceremonies for the first game:

Have Matthews, Rielly and Tavares stand together at centre ice with their backs to the bench (i.e. not on the blue line with the rest of the team)

Have a red carpet from the bench to centre ice

Line Armstrong, Keon, Sittler, Vaive, Clark, Gilmour, Sundin and Phaneuf along the carpet

Have each of the former captains pass along a folded jersey down the line

Have the last captain (dare they let Phaneuf do this? LMAO) walk up to each of the 3 and one by one behind each of the 3, hold the folded jersey over their head and listen for the crowd reaction

After an appropriate wait, tap Tavares on the back. Johnny T turns around [WHILE THE CHILDHOOD PHOTO OF HIM SLEEPING IN HIS LEAFS BED IS ON THE OVERHEAD SCREENS] and hand him the jersey

John unfolds the jersey with the C on it and puts it on.

Drop the puck.

/and before anyone corrects me, no I did not look to see if they are all alive.

Pretty good, but you left out the part where Dion glances up at the press box, nods to Jason Spezza whose giggling mug is put on the Jumbotron, he pulls of his jacket to reveal the fact that he is wearing Leaf Jammis RIGHT FUCKING NOW. The crowd goes nuts and chants "Spez-za" until they name him Captain.

And Babcock's head explodes.

Spezza a healthy scratch tonight.

Babcock saying he'll play Friday, wanted him to get extra time getting caught up on PK since he hasn't done it since leaving Sens.

Not sure I'm buying it.

Conspiracy theories abound.

Honestly, at this point in his career and for what he costs it doesn't make a ton of sense to play him more than 45-55 games a year and that's if he's healthy.

It’s just more confusing that Babs refuses to scratch Marleau all season last year despite him being terrible but doesn’t dress Spezza in game 1.

I know there’s a Leafland twitter freak out going on and I don’t think it’s that big of a deal but...like, they probably aren’t gonna find worse competition to play him against than the Sens.

Exactly. It's a dick move by Babcock. Spezz was probably looking forward to this game. I mean, he looks more done than dinner at this point but if playing him over Nick Shore results in a loss to the Sens, the problems (at least for that game) run WAAAY deeper than Jason Spezza.

Babs is taking a page out of the Wayne Gretzky coaches book, if I recall correctly, Gretzky scratched Kyle Turris when #99 was coaching the Yotes and the Coyotes were in town to play the Canucks.

So I should be offended when Spezza plays Friday night?

I actually had to look that up. That has to be in the running for dick move of the century.

hmmm

:noidea:

Dont see anything that says Spezza's contract requires he must play against former teams. I bet he might not dress for a game against DAL either.

/Wait about, oh, 5 hours. If the Leafs manage to lose, all hell will break loose on twitter.
