I say Toronto in that list. but for me Im outside the box and Say Phoenix. It stands for what is wrong in the NHL and Gary Bettmans "leadership"

Ha. I wish. I'm at work. Just slacking off a bit.

And that hyprocrisy about Southern franchises really pisses me off. Maybe it will never be profitable, but most people don't have a problem with Pittsburgh having a hockey team and this is the first time I can confidently say we will still sell out if we suck. Building ponds in our backgrounds isn't exactly a Pittsburgh tradition...a lot of kids pick up the sport through street hockey. It took almost 50 years for hockey to grow respectably in Pittsburgh, yet people want to write off the Southern team experiment before it's even given a chance. There ARE cities that are just not great sports cities, but hockey will catch in some of those markets...it will just take about half a lifetime. The hockey fanbase is so full of snobs.

And yes, I realize I went on a tangent sort of unrelated to the overall topic.

they needed a miracle draft to save the franchise twice in the last 20 years.
and had to cheat (threw games) in order to get the first one.

that's the genesis of my hatred for the Pens.

/just getting that off of my chest

They only needed a miracle draft once. Despite popular belief, Crosby did not save the team. They would have been fine with ownership dedicated to winning/not bankrupting the team and getting a new arena.

If we start to suck now, it won't be because we're trading every player with a modicum of talent for trash. The ownership almost killed the team, not fairweather fans.

Also, Jersey was tanking for Lemieux too. The Penguins just tanked better.

Edit: But my original point stands...people use climate as an excuse of why hockey won't grow in the South...but I know exactly one person who has a frozen pound in their yard for hockey in Pittsburgh...and it's about the size of a large sandbox.

:D

I always dig the story from that stretch about the Pens having a 3-1 lead after the first period, and the GM came down to the locker room and reamed the coach out.
they ended up losing 6-3.

After the fierce clash with the Avs, I cannot find the same hate for any other team.

I agree with this.
And sadly, I am not sure there will ever be a team that we hate as much as we hated Aves again.

I hope everyone realizes that Bettman doesn't give a shit who you want to see in the Classic. The game isn't aimed at you...as Boss said..."I will watch the game regardless of who plays"...he already has you. Can you honestly say there is a better rivalry right now? A lot of the classic ones have died for various reasons.

No one is going to be talking about Minnesota-Dallas on Sportscenter and that's what Gary wants. It's not fair, but it's good for the league.

And I wonder how many people would be singing a different tune if they picked the Coyotes and Wild. "Everyone deserves a chance!", right?

Detroit will be up again in a couple of years...you can bet on that.

Edit:The hypocrisy is astounding...the same people who bitch and moan about Southern cities not deserving hockey teams/Cups are the same people bitching when the coveted Northern teams get the perks.

Edit: For the record, I'm pro-Southern franchise and pro-Spread the Classic love around.

That was kind of my point, all the rivalries that are physically close between 2 good teams have been played or involve a team that has played in the WC IMO. As for any team in Canada, they have an outdoor game in Calgary THIS SEASON as well so that is a non issue.

You're probably right. But, I do think that the Wings and Hawks will have a couple major situations go down in the next couple years. Don't know who or what will happen, but Chicago is going to try to make a statement in the Central. They are tired of playing second fiddle, and have finally had a taste of the good life.

This year is gonna be awesome. Big brother has some bootstompin' to do...

I can understand the complaints about Pittsburgh being in another Winter Classic. Even though I think the outdoor games suck, people seem to like them so I think whatever the matchup would be would get decent attendance and ratings.
Rangers vs a third of the teams in the NHL perhaps at the new Yankee stadium would be huge.

They didn't make the playoffs and dont really have any national drawing power on the Rangers. Who are the non-fans going to tune in to see?

And yet the Rangers do have national drawing power as a team.
But either way substitute any two reasonably successful teams, at least one American team and the event will do well.
People aren't watching to see the teams, they are watching to see the spectacle. I think the much larger ratings for the outdoor events prove that.

instead of the next winter classic,
they should have Dallas and Phoenix play a road hockey game. :D

I hate everyone... but Toronto, Colorado, Minnesota, Calgary, Chicago and the Rags get a little extra hating.

And I don't care who plays in the winter classic... the out door ice makes the game horrid to watch.

I agree, if anything its sad that such a good rivalry game is being wasted on the outdoor slowed down gimmicky spectacular.
