Wasn't really singling him out, he's a decent player but should not be playing with Tavares and Marner.
Maybe switch things up a little with something like.

Kadri Tavares Marner (London Knights Line)
Marleau Matthews Kapanen (Dad and his kids)
Lindholm Nylander Johnsson (the Swede line)
Brown Goat Hyman (the poor Connor line)

I see what the Shanaplan is now.

Make the playoffs as a WC. This team would do better against AnyMetroOpponent or TB then they will losing to BOS in 7 games in the first round.

Auston has one goal since Christmas. He's a -8 in his past 4 games. Whatever he did to his shoulder, my guess is he either triggered it or never completely worked it out to begin with.

I think AM34 is also playing to protect that next contract.

Hope not, because his play right now is costing him $$.
Doubt it. He's still on a 40 goal/84 point pace despite having missed 14 games and while he's sadly going to the ASG he should get some rest in during this lull in the schedule and get back to his usual goalscoring exploits soon.

Half of the Leafs' problems go away as soon as 1) they start getting more penalty calls, and 2) they start scoring on the PP again.

Part of the lack of calls is shitty reffing but it's on Babcock to get the offensively gifted guys into more advantageous positions to draw the penalties too. It's then on him to stop fucking around with the PP, keep our best guys together and work a system that wasn't figured out 3 months ago.

A lot depends on how the rest of the season goes, for him and for the team. Get the offense going, win a round or two in the playoffs, and he gets paid. Keep struggling with goal scoring, get knocked out in the first round or GASP miss the playoffs, and it will cost him. And Marner.

We shall see.

He would have to flatline for the rest of the year, which would be very surprising even if he is affected by lingering effects of the shoulder injury. There's just no upside to the Leafs playing hardball with Matthews - there's already a market set for guys with his numbers, he's an incredibly important member of the team in ways that don't compare at all to Nylander, and given the amount of contracts the Leafs have to work on this summer there's every possibility that someone would offer sheet him. If he isn't signed before July 1, it only means he either doesn't want to be here or wants something on the team to change before committing to being here (like, for instance, the coach).

Marner's getting paid regardless too. You don't lead the team in scoring for two straight years and then take a lowball offer lol

FWIW they actually announced yesterday that they were cancelling praccy today so the only news here is that Dubas is having a presser.

To announce he has traded Nylander to Columbus for Dubinsky and Milano.

Yeah, no shit Marner doesn't want to talk contract until he sees what Mathews gets.
