Except now drafting top 3 does not break the bank until year 6. Dont need to overpay guys out of the gate anymore.

Ya but you gotta pay them if you want to keep them once they enter their prime. And if "wanting to play in Detroit" for less money than someone else is willing to pay them is what fans are holding out hope for, we way as well pack this puppy up for good and never watch the Lions again.

Calvin officially not playing in Pro Bowl. I guess that's not surprising either way.

I agree you have to pay your players. If what was talked about is right. Suh was offered a contract to be the highest paid defensive tackle by detroit. He wanted to be the highest paid defensive player and Miami was dumb enough to give it to him.

If Suh's asking price was remotely close to his value for his position, I think teams would have been lining up to try and woo him.

Detroit offered him a deal that would have made him the highest paid defensive player in the league. Miami just offered more.

ESPN reports that Detroit's offer to Suh was $17 million per year with $58 million guaranteed -- a deal that would have still made Suh the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Moar:

From the Free Press' Dave Birkett: The Lions had offered Suh a richer deal than Watt, one that paid him an average of $17 million per year with $58 million guaranteed, but in the end did not want to approach Miami's money.

Paying Suh more than Watt is laughable. Luckily, Miami outdumbassed us or we would be in cap hell for another 3+ years.

That makes my point even more. He went to the highest bidder. I love the guy, but that contract is going to kill Miami.

Who the fuck WANTS to be in Detroit? If you're the Detroit Lions you better over pay for the leagues best players when you have that rare opportunity. Or you end up with a half decade full of top 3 picks all over again.

Some will blast Suh for leaving Detroit, yet will prolly give CJ a break and place blame on the Lions. Suh may have also have left for same reasons of the franchise sucks while also cashing in. Can't blame any athlete.

CJ chose to stay in Detroit when he saw that extension on the table. He got a insanely amount of money long before WR's were getting that amount. Hell two of the games tops still got less this year. CJ chose Detroit and money over winning IMO as Suh leaving Detroit and cashing in.

When these guys get that amount of money I expect way more than drops that cost the Ravens game. Giving up on a onside kick. Fumbling the ball at the goal line, yet some are still in denial and blame the refs. CJ had the opportunity to keep the game out of the refs hands. He didn't.

That post is not me blasting CJ all of a sudden either. I have blasted any player from any Detroit team when deemed neccasary. Stafford, Suh, Miggy don't get breaks and neither has CJ from over the years.

I know, myself, I wouldn't place blame on anyone if Calvin walks away. He has been nothing but a great player, teammate and the consummate professional. He'd be walking away leaving millions on the table putting his health in front of a monster payday.

IMO, fans would have felt the same way about Barry if he would have handled his retirement the same way, instead of waiting a week before camp started to walk away and leaving the team hanging.

@Rollingthndr called it pretty clear months ago.

CJ ft the final touches on being Lionized this year.

I remember the Baltimore game a couple years ago I think when he dropped that huge catch but it didn't seem to frustrate him at all. Stafford was so pissed..... Reggie Bush was the only other one to have a winning desire in his eyes to win. I think it might of been Reggie's first year, that's why. Everyone else was Lionized.

I knew someone who was close to some Lions players and he told me a couple months ago that Calvin said he was done. I guess he may be right.

It surely hasn't been confirmed, however, reading into some of his answers to questions asked by media and actions on the field (doesn't keep all those TD footballs) it may very well be a likely scenario.
I would feel much inclined to retire in CJ's position. If he has invested well, he is set for life and why risk possible dementia/Alzheimer's due to CTE.
